a soft spot especially in a fresh water boats is often, but not always, an indicator of more serious stringer rot. Does that model have large removeable deck plates so you can see? not that a seller is going to let you do any testing in the stringers.

good hull and motor. I would wait till spring so you can sea trial it,,however short dollars for a historically reliable tandem package,,any pics? [links]
One approach is to get it anyway, use it and if it gets worse, replace the hull. Check the transom; that's more important.

1997 Cobia 174CC This is a turn key, ready to fish, Cobia 17 foot center console fishing boat. It has fairly new upholstery, a new custom aluminum trailer, a brand new simrad go5 touch screen gps fishfinder with total scan/structure scan transducer, minn kota talon 8' shallow water anchor, new wiring and new rhino-lined 33 gal aluminum gas-tank that was custom built and installed by un-reel marine. Livewell, automatic bilge pump, batteries replaced last year, 75 mercury oil injected was rebuilt by first choice marine 2 years ago. This thing runs at 33mph with me and 1 other person if I take it to 5500 RPMs. You will not find a boat with so much new stuff for this price. normal cosmetic crap but this boat will run and fish awesome. PRICE IS FIRM. I will remove the talon and the new fishfinder if you want it for a little less. Don't waste my time with trades or offers any lower than list price. 1996 Cobia 174 Center Console This is a 1996 Cobia 174 Center Console with a 2008 Yamaha 115. This boat is in really good condition for its age and has a newer 2008 Yamaha 115 2 stroke Engine. However, this is related to models built in the late 1990s, when wood was still being used in the construction process. In older models, wood was used as the stringers (or structural support) for the boat. If they were not sealed properly by the factory, then water could get in and cause them to rot over the years. more
