A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more. [links]

Perry notes that although he and Ted Brewer produced a laminate schedule and structural layout, Ta Chiao did not follow any of this work. They “called fro multiple hatsection longitudinals, but the yard used a beefy single-skin laminate with no longitudinals. In those days, especially in Taiwan, there was no structural problem that could not be overcome with more mat and roving.” This means that at least the early 54’s had little structural framing to stiffen the hull. here

Engine
CT 54’s generally have 120 HP or 135HP Ford Lehmans under the saloon. Some rare versions have a large Perkins diesel. To access the engine room, you pull up the saloon floorboards. They break up in many pieces. Port and starboard are fuel and water tanks. Forward is room for a generator. Forwardmost is another 200 gallon fuel tank. This engine setup really opens up the living space. With the engine and tankage below, you have more room for accommodations. The setup is similar to the Gulfstar Sailmaster 47 though lower in the bilge which leads to better stability. The disadvantages are the disruption for using the saloon. Though once you get a hang of the floorboard layout, the disruption is minimal – one board for checking oil or batteries or any of the tanks. Expect to replace the black iron tanks if they have not been. These last 20 years. The fuel tanks consist of two saddle tanks and another tank forward. Access to the engine, generator, and tanks is relatively simple except for the forward tank. To remove this fuel tank, you have to take out the forward bulkhead and saw the tank out. With all this tankage, you can cruise for awhile without refueling.

What To Look For
“Don’t touch CT 54’s before 1981,” told one owner. “That is unless the price is really low. The construction techniques were really bad.” That seems harsh, but you should definitely be wary of any CT 54 and more so the earlier the build date. Leaky teaky characterizes the CT 54 build reputation. While heavily laid up, the Ta Chiao Brothers had not quite hit their stride. No matter the year, the deck ought to be carefully looked at and after 30 years is due for replacement or removal. The early model cabintrunks are commonly rotten. The spruce spars and mast step should be checked for rot. Any original stainless steel from the 1970’s Taiwan is suspect and prone to pitting. here

On Deck
The teak bowsprit forward is wide and easy to mount. The windlass will probably be a giant, archaic looking piece of hardware. The deck should be leaky teaky with mitered edge pieces and black cocking. Two dorades give ventilation from the foredeck. Chainplates mount through the outer edge of the deck. These have self-tacking booms on the inner staysail which clutters up the foredeck. The raised quarterdeck is a good two foot step up. The primary winches vary in location and size. They can be mounted outside of the cockpit on stainless flanges or normally mounted on the combing top. The cabin trunk continued a little ways aft. Two dorades give ventilation to the aft stateroom. 1982 Ta Chiao CT 44 Please contact owner Patti at 925-325-seven two zero six. Boat is located in Jacksonville, Florida. This is a project boat in that the interior and exterior needs a lot of TLC. There are a lot of ways to deal with it, but it depends on your expertise and desire in finish. The interior ceilings in the salon and aft cabin need to be replaced. This is not difficult as the panels are held in place by teak strips, so it is a matter of taking the old panel and using it as a pattern and remounting. (There is a small table saw that goes with the boat.) Water from the mast and traveler damaged the walls. The leaks have been taken care of , but the ceiling and walls have not. The gaskets need to be replaced in the hatches, and the gasket material is there. The floor needs to be refinished, but the good news is that the sole is made of a very thick layer, about 3/8" of teak and holly on plywood. The aft head had the faucets removed and so the plumbing side of that needs to be replaced. There is a generator that may or may not, probably not, work. It is a Lister generator. It takes up the whole cabinet under the companionway. A newer, smaller, quieter one would be better. There is a blackwater system installed. I do not know if the macerator or any of that system is functional. It was when I sold the boat. There is also a desalinator, but I do not know its condition. Almost all the electronics need to be replaced. The GPS/chart worked fine and is not very old. Make: Ta Chiao Model: CT 44 Length: 44 Dealer: BoatsFSBO.com ID: 218928 Ad provided by BoatingBay

This 1975 CT 41 is in good condition. As you walk around her decks you will be impressed with her sellers' love to keep her in top shape. The standing rigging is 12 years old, the spars and masts are aluminum. The bowsprit was rebuilt 2 years ago made out of Douglas fir and teak. New topside paint was applied to her decks in Jan. 2021 The autopilot, Raymarine Depth Finder, and radar do not work. There is a water maker onboard that has been pickled for several years, its current condition is unknown and a generator was onboard but has been removed. The liferaft and EPIRB are outdated and need to be re-certified Stock #226510 Very nice and well maintained 1975 Ta Chiao CT41! Ready to sail! Stepping onboard this Ta Chiao is like stepping back in time! The current owner has owned her for 21 years and has loved and cared for her and it shows. Both mast and mizzen have stackpacks for ease of dropping the sails. Her decks are solid and have many more years of service. The helm has a great 360-degree view. She is powered by a 65hp Yanmar engine with an upgraded 130amp alternator. There are six batteries maintained by a 130w solar panel. Down below the ornate woodwork is amazing! The air conditioner nicely cools the cabin. The galley is on the starboard side with a gimbaled stove/oven, in-counter refrigeration, microwave, and storage. The upholstery is in great condition and sets the tone down below. The settee is just forward of the galley. The Captain's Quarters has a pull out extendable bed. Her sails are stored below as not to weather during Hurricane Season. The head has dual entry and a separate stand up shower. The settee and dinette are comfortably sized. Overhead the ornate woodwork is classic Taiwan craftsmanship. There are several stained glass portholes that just set the tone to sail away! The cockpit is comfortable for long passages. The seller states that this boat can take the weather since she is heavy with a full keel! She is out on a mooring, so showings will have to be scheduled ahead and you must be able to climb aboard from an inflatable dinghy. Included is a Viking 4 man liferaft and EPIRB that need to be re-certified, and a watermaker that was pickled for storage years back. She has a full 6-foot Keel keeping her steady in all weather conditions. Anchor confidently with the 70 lb Ronca anchor. Her headroom is between 6' 2" and 6' 6". Reason for selling is switching to trawler.

The entire vessel was restored in 2012 with new or rebuilt parts. All the finishes and coatings were new as of 2012. The Perkins 4-107 was completely rebuilt in 2012 and current hours reflect time used since then. It's fresh water cooled and the current owner reports that the engine runs great. With the 3 bladed prop, the fuel burn is estimated around 3/4 GPH. In 2012, all new tin copper wiring was run throughout, with LED lighting installed and a 3000w Xantrex Inverter. The Main and Mizzen masts are wood and the booms are aluminum, with fold out foot pegs on the main for easy climbing. Chainplates were re-bedded in 2012. The Bottom was last painted in 2017. This Ketch appears in really nice condition and ready for new adventures. Stock #162567 ***SALE PENDING*** Very Nice Ketch completely rebuilt in 2012. Built to cruise Alaska and the Pacific Northwest This Beautiful Ketch Rig is a 1972 Ta Chiao Formosa Model. These boats were built in the same shipyards that also built the CT Model of sailboat. Its hull is reinforced fiberglass with a round bilge and full keel. She was completely rebuilt in 2012, with the purpose in mind to sail Alaska and the Pacific Northwest. She never made it north. Instead, she cruised the entire coast of California, then made a year-long trip cruising the entire Pacific Coast of Mexico. She has sleeping quarters for up to 6 adults, with a single head and shower. The Galley is well outfitted with a sink, microwave, Stove/oven combo, and nice sized fridge. The Fridge runs off 12 v/ 110 V and Propane. An on-demand Hot Water heater takes care of dishes and bath night. Her electronics package consists of Sitex Chartplotter, Garmin GPSMap 440s GPS/Chartplotter, Clipper Wind Speed indicator, Standard Horizon VHF radio and ComNav Autopilot. All lines run back to the cockpit to actually allow for single handed sailing should the need arise. The Stern Lounge is a great place to relax under sail or on the hook. And, the bimini isn't just to block out the sun, it's part of a full cockpit enclosure that includes both bug screens and canvas enclosures. So, whether it's the tropics or inclement weather, you're covered. What a nice boat to cruise the world with.
