A misaligned firing order on the Chevy 350 is going to cause your engine a whole lot of trouble. It will be small at first, but as you continue to use it, it will get worse and worse. Some people mention that they can get their 350 to turn over but they can’t get it to stay running, and that’s a clear sign of misaligned firing order. If you notice this happening to your engine, take it to a mechanic immediately.

*However, this firing order does NOT work for the LSX series, as it has its own particular sequence. [links]

As much as possible, get your repairs and checkups done with a certified Chevrolet mechanic. Remember: the Chevy 350 is an older type of engine and requires a certain type of mechanic to inspect it.

The 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 firing order usually works on older V8* engines, thanks to its cross-plane crankshaft design, something you can find on other manufacturer engines’ like GM, Chrysler, and the Ford Windsor (excluding the 351). While Ford engines might seem like the firing order will be different (because of the way Ford engineers numbered their cylinders), the sequence remains exactly the same as the Chevy 350. [links]

Talk to your mechanic. Yes, I understand that you want to be as hands-on with your Chevy as much as possible (and, well, you really should be!), but when it comes to something that you might not understand, go straight to a pro. A Chevy engine is a complicated piece of machinery, which means that, no matter how many hours of Googling you do, your internet knowledge still won’t beat a mechanic with years of experience under their overalls.

More often than not, younger mechanics will be more well-versed with modern engines like the Ram Jet 502 or the LS7, but might not have the mechanical know-how to completely help you with your 350. No, you’re not less of a ‘car guy’ or ‘car gal’ just because you needed professional help to get the firing order of your Chevy 350 just right. In as much as you go to a doctor to get help when you’re sick, so should you go to a mechanic when your car, particularly your Chevy 350, starts sputtering like a newborn baby.

Why Chevy Stuff here? I have some that's why and I do like the Chevy Big Block as my second favorite domestic engine, right behind the SBF and each for a different reason. The Small block Chevy? Take it or leave it, great engine, but I want SB2.2 heads or something if I ever did one up. Enough commentary.

The firing order works for the following Big Block Chevy Engines -

366 Chevy
396 Chevy
402 Chevy (Sometimes referred to as a 396)
427 Chevy
454 Chevy
502 Chevy [links]

Also remember that the position of the spark plug wires does not matter AS LONG AS THE ORDER IS MAINTAINED! If you need to rotate the cap for any reason don't worry about pulling the wires and rotating them around. Again this is fine as long as the firing order sequence for the engine is maintained and you check your engines timing.

Here is one for the Small and BIG block Chevrolet engines. It does not work for LSX series as they use a different firing order. Everything is front view, engine and distributors. Also both types of caps are shown, HEI and old school Points Style. Remember you can put the wires any where you want as long as the sequence is right. Sometimes you need to do this to clear things with distributor interference.

So if you want to cut and paste the Chevy Small Block and Big Block Firing order it is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2

Pull the distributor out of the engine. Hold it next to the new distributor. Make a mark on the new distributor in the same place that the old distributor is marked. Place the new rotor on the rotor on the new distributor, lining up the center of the metal piece with the mark on the distributor. [links]

When installing a Chevy 5.7 distributor, the engine must be at top dead center, or else the engine's timing will be off and it will not run. You should also replace the gasket between the base of the distributor and the intake manifold. If the gasket leaks, oil gets all over the top of the intake manifold and the back of the engine. The Chevy 5.7 firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. The cylinders are numbered 1, 3, 5 and 7 on the driver's side and 2, 4, 6 and 8 on the passenger side. The Nos. 1 and 2 cylinders are closest to the radiator.

Stick the screwdriver in the spark plug hole, and have the helper bump the engine over each time you tell him to "bump it." As the piston comes up, the screwdriver will move up in your hand. When you feel the screwdriver get to the top, have the helper turn the key off. Put a dot on the top of the No. 1 spark plug wire boot where it attaches to the distributor cap.

Use the spark plug socket to remove spark plug wire off the No. 1 cylinder. The No. 1 cylinder on a Chevy is on the driver's side and is closest to the radiator. Pull the coil wire off the coil.

Lift the distributor cap off the distributor. Mark the bottom of the distributor, just under the center of the metal piece in the rotor, and on the engine in the same place (matchmark), so that the new distributor can be put in the same way. Use the distributor wrench to loosen the distributor hold down bolt. here

Slide the new gasket onto the distributor shaft and push it all the way up to the base. Insert the distributor into the engine, facing the rotor about 10 degrees to the right of the mark on the block. Slide it into the block. When the gears mesh, the rotor should turn and line up with the lines on the distributor and the engine. If not, pull the distributor out about an inch, turn it a bit, then try again.
