I've read the manual and also searched the forums, but being the kind of guy I am, I'll ask anyway. I've never done this before with 4 stroke and have found over the years that even with proper handling, there's sometimes gotcha's that can be avoided.

I have a brand spankin' new Merc 9.9 4 stroke. I know that I should store and transport the motor upright or on the tiller handle side to prevent engine oil running where it shouldn't be. The question is: is laying it on the tiller handle side for a long transport "fool proof" as far as not having any problems with the engine oil? Is there still a chance that when I get to my destination I will have any issues with the oil leaking to where it shouldn't be? If so, I'll just drain the oil and replace it when I get there. This is 350 miles each way and there'll be some bouncing.

Seriously, I asked the question because I had never transported a 4 stroke and didn't know if the recommended positioning actually worked OK under all circumstances. For the future info seekers who stumble onto this thread. here

An innovative shallow water drive feature lets you tilt the motor up, allowing you to easily operate in shallow areas. Shallow water drive greatly reduces the risk of engine damage.

The combination of the 2.33:1 gear ratio and the 10" x 6 1/2" Power Thrust 4-blade propeller creates 60% more thrust in reverse and 15% more in forward. The result is improved maneuverability and performance.

Todays 9.9-horsepower four strokes pack just the right amount of punch for a portable dinghy engine. The downside, as you may have guessed, is their hefty weight. The three Practical Sailor tested range in weight from 82 to 92 pounds. All are two-cylinder, water-cooled engines that take about a quart of oil, and all are pull-start models, with chokes that need to be used only when the engine is cold. All come with a standard 3.1-gallon plastic fuel tank, a fuel hose, and an aluminum propeller. In terms of propulsion, none of these portable outboard engines has it all. So after evaluating how easy each was to operate, transport, store, and maintain, we based our recommendations on weighing each engines pluses and minuses.

We would not recommend the Honda for those who anticipate having to mount and remove the engine from the dinghy frequently&emdash;even if you plan to use a halyard and winch for muscle. Its too heavy and cumbersome&emdash;and that plastic handle makes it even more difficult to move around. Wed recommend the Honda for permanent installation, however. Its quiet, fuel-efficient, has standard charging capability, a five-year warranty. And don’t forget about Hondas reputation for durability.

If you anticipate using your dinghy a great deal, wed seriously consider the Mercury, our Best Choice. Its the most user-friendly engine in our group, provides peppy performance, and runs quietly.

Thanks Peterbud, but that is a Main Wire Harness for a Control Box. Not an extension cable for a battery hook-up. more

Ron's right, use the wiring sizing table here

I did not see an extension kit from Honda, but there is one from Mercury or you can build your own. Not a good idea to simply splice a longer length in on a battery cable.

My Honda 9.9 w/ electric and pull start, 12A alternator has about 5' of 6 gauge cable on it. According to Honda America, there is no damage to the alternator running without the battery attached. here
