With several months to a few years of regular use, these carburetors tend to be grimy and dirty, which could, in turn, be the cause of malfunctioning as well as noisy and ineffective operations. Having said that, there are several carburetor cleaning products available in the market nowadays. These cleaning products usually come in canisters, which allow you to spray air fast enough to remove all the dirt and grime that may have been accumulated. Should it be too grimy, however, one could make use of brushes to get rid of the dirt, but water should never be used. more

There are several kinds of screwdrivers out in the market nowadays. It is one of the most common and most basic tools that are part of just about every single toolbox. For use in adjusting idle Johnson outboard motors, it's best to choose one which is neither too big nor too small; the former could get in the way and scratch or damage nearby parts, while too small of a screwdriver would most definitely result in a poor or difficult adjustment. here

The reason for this is that their maintenance is the one which is minimal. It’s usually fixed and bolted onto the stern of the boat and is also a single machine which makes its installation a relatively easy process. While it has been perceived to be a thing of the past, with stern-drive engines becoming the more modern and popular alternative, stricter regulations imposed by regulatory boards have enticed bowriders to resort to them, with a resurgence in its popularity, given that its restrictions on use are significantly more lenient. more

When it comes to adjusting the idle state on Johnson Outboard motors, the part involved would most definitely have to be the Carburetor. As with any other engine, this is the part which serves as the " combustion powerhouse" of every engine and works by blending air and fuel by employing the Bernoulli's Principle. This is basically what powers up your outboard motor and therefore, has to be cleaned on a regular basis for proper combustion to ensue. more

Finally, re-attach the cable and check that it pulls the linkage up against the idle stop when you put it in neutral. If it doesn't, adjust the black nylon attaching nut till it does (without strain). [links]

Watch the linkage on the side of the powerhead whild somebody operates the throttle control. You will see the cable operating a tall lever that pivots in the middle. In the upper half of that lever you will see a long screw with a knurled head. That is the idle stop screw. Do not confuse it with the spark advance screw which is elsewhere.

The proper way to adjust it is to disconnect the cable and operate the linkage lever by hand, holding it against the idle stop. Then adjust the screw for your desired idle speed. here

This all needs to be done with the boat in the water because it will idle at a different speed in the water than it does on land with muffs.

I think I have two separate issues here with the 90 but Im not sure. I almost think that the carbs have never been right on this motor since day one from the 80's. Then now this issue with the motor going flat for a short period of time has me concerned. Any and all advise is appreciated. Vince

If you want that to run even better, try the XD-50 or XD100

2) If the primer is indeed shooting fuel, use it to your advantage in trouble shooting. On acceleration, "BUMP" the primer to add extra fuel into your motor. If the proper bump gives it a better "cold engine"acceleration, you have a carburetor issue OR fuel isn't getting to the spark plugs when prescribed by the engineer. You have substituted fuel into your equation. [links]
