1998 Sea Ray 290 Sundancer I have owned the boat for 12 years and its in good-excellent shape. Has Twin 5.7L electronic fuel injected Mercruisers (260hp each), AC Inverter, no generator, power windlass with cockpit and bow controls, trailer trim. Had a recent (in last year, spent > $15,000) tune-up and major update consisting of replacing risers, new port outdrive, head gaskets, custom cockpit engine flushing system, all new gauges, new batteries (3), new trim motors, new Garmin GPS/Fishfinder, new radio, stereo. The motors have between 370-380 hours on them. 9000 BTU A/C, microwave, stove, refrigerator, TV/VCR, sink, full head/shower (cabin/aft platform), Captains queen aft cabin, sleeps 5-6, interior seating in excellent shape, kept covered. Cruising around various marine discussion group web sites, we find a lot of complaints about wet and rotting fiberglass over wood stringers. As we've said before, there's nothing wrong with glass over wood stringers, if its done right. When it comes to small boats, how rarely it is! The photos below reveal that not only were there holes just partially cut through the hull stringers that were never completed, but that these holes were letting water into the plywood and causing it to rot. Looks like they started to drill holes and then changed their mind about where to put them.

Under the aft berths we get a look at the hull stringers. They appear to be quite high here, maybe as much as a foot. Despite the fact that everything is heavily painted over with gel coat, its obvious that these stringers are only glassed about half-way up. And on the upper half, we found what looked like a lot of screwdriver stab marks. What, you say? Well, we thought that because there are a lot of so-called surveyors out there who will do things like this -- test something by stabbing it with a screwdriver blade. We asked the owner if the boat had been surveyed before. He said no, so we went back and looked again. Staples. Driven by a high-powered pneumatic gun. Near as we can tell, the stringers are pieces of plywood stapled together because these deeply driven staples are all over them. Gee, will that let water into the wood to cause rot? more

One of the very first things you notice about this 1993 model 28'7" Express is the narrow beam of ony 9'0" which, we are told, is intended to make the boat trailerable,and is precisely the reason why our client was looking at it. And while there are superficial styling changes over the years, this is still your basic 27/28/29 SeaRay Sundance with the raised forward portion of the cockpit, large bench helm seat, and cave man style "aft cabin" where you can stow away a couple of youngsters if need be.

Here is the key trick though. If you cobble together a 12V source (battery, charger, whatever) with a cigarette lighter adapter, and plug it into the cigarette lighter 12v port at the helm (which is normally used to provide power to 12v devices), the electricity will flow back into the boat and allow you to use boat electrics — hatch cover, etc. Completely undocumented and SeaRay won’t give you the parts to do it, but the service guys admit it will work. here

We have a SeaRay 280 Bowrider, 1996, but I am sure the info applies to newer models. Someone (not me, I know better!) unwisely left the batteries on when they left the boat. Which of course is always a mistake on a boat. Batteries are dead.

The SeaRay owner’s manuals are useless (though you can download them all here to your heart’s content). Clearly they don’t expect boat owners to actually ever look at the engine. So I called Lake Union Searay Redmond branch — nice people, very helpful. Apparently there is some way to reach through the oil check hatch and remove pins from the hydraulic lifts to allow you to muscle the hatch cover up — but it would require an intimate knowledge of the engine compartment since you are basically reaching around blind, the hatch is just large enough for your arm and no more.

So I got a $21 small riding mower battery. Went to Fry’s and got lighter adapter hardware. Wired them together, plugged it into the cigarette lighter, and pop the breaker went in the boat. Disconnected, switched polarity, reset the breaker, and tried again. Voila. Hatch cover openers worked, I can now get at the batteries and either recharge or replace as needed. here

Thanks again guys - YES - we have a slip locked down. With the economy in Nevada continueing to decline, there are PLENTY of slips. I ended up getting a great slip at Lake Mead Marina in the "fairway". Lots of space and clear view of the marina (better security). [links]

I wish the Maxum had a trailer, but I honestly have no vehicle to pull it safely at this point. Even if I had a trailer, I would be stuck storing at my house, not a big problem, but a bit of a hassle. here

We went back to the boat dealer and they were great! The promised, in writing, that the boat is, and would be, tip-top when it went to the water. I believe them and we are feeling good about the deal (fingers crossed of course).
