Oh, with MPI you probably don't want to fog. It may screw up your MAP sensor.

I agree with Patrick that your insurance won't cover if you do it yourself. I've been doing my own for 16 years & always very cautious following my steps one by one. more

Being that you have closed cooling, your winterization is actually really easy. Do you have the manual pump (little blue pump)? Is there a small Schrader valve with small air tubes that go to your sea water pump? If so, your winterization process is even easier, or less prone to doing it wrong. When I do my engines (I have a whole document I made up that I follow step by step for my entire boat), I warm them up a bit first running on a hose with muffs on the drives. Then I use the manual pump and push all the water out of the heat exchanger/risers/manifolds. Then I restart with pink stuff flowing thru. Again, with fresh water cooled (antifreeze and heat exchanger), it is much simpler because you do not have to warm up and be concerned whether the thermostat is open. [links]

Dream - I have the shrader, but no hand pump. Seems that everyone with FWC here on the lakes seems to misplace the hand pump. Looks to me like my hand held bicycle pump is the same darn thing. Do you know if it is? Do you drain the sea water out of the blue plugs? Do you drain the anti freeze out of the blue plugs after you run it through? more

@califco thanks for starting this thread and @Dream_Inn I'm loving your comments as I've been wrestling with whether or not to pay to have my 350 MPI closed cooling horizons winterized or DIY this year. I've never winterized mercruisers but I figure if I can change the fuel pump and anti-diesel solenoid on my 5E generator and fog the throttle bodies and cylinders on my V6 outboard I should be able to do it!

This year I removed the 3 blue drain plugs; let all water drain then replaced them. I then removed large hose at tstat housing and dumped in 2 gallons of anti freeze, then removed each hose to each manifold and dumped in 1/2 gallon in each. Then I removed the 3 blue plugs and let antifreeze drain, and left the plugs off. This method should have mixed with any water remaining from the initial drain, and coated all internals with some non-ethanol based antifreeze to reduce corrosion. more

S'pose you pay a mechanic to winterize, but still end up with a cracked engine block. You file a claim against your boat insurance . they probably cover it, because the owner did the right thing. Maybe they go after the mechanic, maybe not, but it's their problem.

UndeadCircus

@ Liberty44140 I'm pretty sure the tstat wasn't open when I filled it with antifreeze. It was my 2nd year with this boat ('06 FV300). The first year I drained both motors and all was fine the following Spring. In 2017 a buddy had the kit where you hook a water hose up to muffs with a 3-way valve hooked to 5-gallon container to hold antifreeze.

But if you winterize it yourself and crack a block, I wonder if they would call it negligence, and decline coverage.

While I completely agree with Al, especially if you don't have the time or not sure of what you are doing. But, . I have seem many times over and over where the mechanic (many different ones) does a crappy job and then claims not accountable for it.

The 23-foot, 6-inch 226 Captiva is a brand-new hull for Rinker this year, and we were testing it with a number of the R1 extreme watersports features on board, including the tower with speakers and the R-series graphics. For the record, if you opt for the complete R1 package, which is a $4,500 option, you'll get a custom folding wakeboard tower with board racks, a stereo upgrade (with two tower speakers, four cockpit speakers, a 10-inch subwoofer, a transom remote, a six-disc changer and a six-month Sirius subscription), a large rearview watersports mirror, R-series graphics and a High 5 stainless steel prop.

nowhereman
16.05.2021 20:30:52

Like many other craft this size, the R1 has a walk-through transom for easy access to the large swim platform. Unlike many other builders, however, Rinker managed to keep a full-beam sunpad in the equation by building in a double-hinged section that folds out of the way to reveal the walk-through (and the folding section can be propped up to create a large chaise lounge). more

Serious watersports enthusiasts, especially wakeboarders, will probably want to stick with the High 5 stainless steel prop that comes with the R1 package. Our test boat, however, was equipped with a 350 MAG MPI MerCruiser with a Bravo III spinning a 28-inch three-blade stainless steel prop set, which provides fine watersports ability along with better cruising performance than the High 5 prop, which would require an Alpha I drive. here
