Propane tank pressure ranges from about 100 to 200 pounds per square inch. The size of the tank does not influence the pressure that the propane is under. more

The outside temperature and the temperature of the propane in the tank can cause pressure to fluctuate. Warmer propane means more pressure inside the tank. When refilling, it is important to remember that 20 percent of the tank should be left empty to allow for gas expansion should the tank become warmer. In very cold conditions, overfilling of the tank is a concern. If the tank is moved to an indoor area, the gas will expand and release propane rather than air via the pressure release valve. Thus, in a 20-pound tank designed to hold 20 pounds of propane, the actual propane capacity is a few pounds less.

There are four “Gas Laws” that explain the relationship between gases, pressure, temperature, and volume. Generally, propane pressure should be between 100 and 200 psi ensures that the liquid propane gas remains in a liquid state.

Normally, the pressure inside a propane tank fluctuates slightly based on the outside temperature. For example, a standard 20-pound propane tank at 70 degrees will have 145 psi internal pressure. That same tank on a 100-degree day will have 172 psi of pressure.

Also Know, can a propane tank be used for compressed air? Use propane tank for air compressor. If it's rated for the pressure you will exert with a compressed air system, then I can't see why not, as the tank doesn't care if it's liquid propane or compressed air inside. On the other hand, if you can't identify the pressure range for the tank, don't take a chance.

LPG gas cylinder-bottle pressure all depends on the temperature. At 100°F, a 100 lb propane tank has 172 PSIG of pressure. Similarly, a 45kg gas bottle has 1183kPa at 38°C.

For the end-user, propane is a safe, easy to use heating source that can power barbecue grills, home heating systems, and even refrigerators. But along the way, from extraction in the field to storage at your local Ferrellgas office, propane undergoes a number of different processes to ready it for commercial and residential use.

Knowing how much pressure is in a propane tank is important, but it’s only part of the information you need to know to get the most from your experience with propane.

If your tank is painted black or another dark, heat-absorbing color, it could further increase the internal temperature and pressure of the tank. [links]
