I am always leary of any Merc that has been frozen up with any sort of rust. Even if you free it up, chances are there is some bearing damage, too. That will materialize itself with time as the motor will slowly (sometimes quickly) shake and grind itself apart. A complete disassembly is the only way to inspect all the bearings and replace what's damaged. A little emory cloth and some new bearings can ad years to the life of the motor. Being a '98, it is worth putting a bit of in depth TLC into it.

So I pulled gear and found only the top half of the part in-tact. The bottom of the part - the half-round section had broken off and was down in the bottom of the crank case. I found it with a couple of bamboo skewers after fishing around for a while.

Before you disengage your garage door opener from your garage door, make sure that the door is in the down position. Attempting to disengage your door in the up position is extremely dangerous. This is due to the fact that if the spring on your garage door is broken, it could cause the full weight of the garage door to come crashing down.
