24 volt trolling motor battery wiring
See full version: 24 Volt Battery
Using the same series process used with multiple battery flashlights, you are able to connect two 12 volt deep cycle batteries together in order to make in essence a 24 volt battery, that can power a 24 volt accessory - like a trolling motor. Deep cycle batteries are used in this application because they are designed to deliver power over time, unlike a typical starter battery which is made to deliver a power jolt for starting a motor. Following is a diagram of how to make a 24 volt battery:

You need to use heavier wire than when connecting radios, live well pumps, or depth finders to the battery. Note the wires that run from the battery to the starter of your car engine. Or note the wire that comes off your trolling motor. You should match that size as close to possible. It will likely be 6-8 gauge. [links]

By using this same sequence you can set up a 36 volt system. On freshwater fishing boats the most common use for either a 24 or 36 volt battery system is to power a trolling motor. Do not connect 3 twelve volt batteries to run a 24 volt trolling motor. Damage will occur to your trolling motor if you try to connect 36 volts and your motor is only rated for 24 volts. Read instructions carefully. Some 2020 technology trolling motors new to the market may run off either 24 or 36 volt. Again read carefully.

You can wire your trolling motor to your battery in some cases, and your project is done. Most systems will include a multibank battery charger. You will also see notes for where to install a plug, a switch, and a Fuse or breaker in the schematic above.

Your batteries should have an individual resting voltage of 12.7, and their voltage should be about 25.6 when put into a series. If your readings are below these numbers, consider choosing different batteries.

Wiring a 24 volt motor is a simple task that most people can handle. After attaching your motor to your boat and placing your batteries, your next step will plan out your wiring. Making a wiring schematic is a great place to start.

In fact, failing to recharge your batteries after use can reduce their lifespan.

Get the necessary tools and equipment to wire your 24v trolling system. In this case, you need two 12v deep cycle batteries, a battery connector cable, and a trolling motor power cable.
If they are not properly maintained, the battery life shortens.

Battery-powered accessories on a boat often operate on something other than a 12-volt power source. For example, trolling motors often need either 24 or 36 volts. Most easily available batteries do not normally come in those voltages; so you can connect two or more in a series in order to double or triple your voltage while maintaining the same capacity rating (Amp Hours).
Your series is now faultless and you have a full 36 volts of power to your trolling motor. For a 24 volt system, you plainly leave out the third battery and connect the negative lead from the trolling motor to the negative final of the second battery. [links]

Arrange the power units in the battery compartment of your boat so that their opposite terminals are next to one another. The negative final of #1 should be next to the safe bet final of #2, and the negative final of the #2 should be next to the safe bet final of #3. here
