The problem with DC alternator chargers is that when your motor is off, they can not charge your batteries. On long days fishing the bay, I have had to idle my main motor to get through the day, which is not good on your main motor. here

i have a 24 volt trolling motor, 2 batteries for that and 1 cranking battery. the onboard charger is connected to the 2 trolling batteries. how can i tell if one of the batteries is bad, or if one side of the charger is not working? i have charged the batteries with a battery charger and one is showing on multimeter 12.5 and the other is 12.8. How do you get 36 volts from two 12 volt batteries? It isn't possible unless someone tied the starting battery in as well. here
