Hi all - been lurking for a long time and have learned a lot. I'm in the market for a mid 90's 20'-23' runabout for the family. I was dead set on the Merc 5.7 (or greater) and read most threads on the forum. Looking at a lot of boats.

Hi all - been lurking for a long time and have learned a lot. I'm in the market for a mid 90's 20'-23' runabout for the family. I was dead set on the Merc 5.7 (or greater) and read most threads on the forum. Looking at a lot of boats.
Well, I found a real solid boat, 1995 21' Wellcraft Eclipse. Has everything I want feature and condition wise. Price is right too.
But has a Volvo Penta 5.8FL motor and outdrive. I'm up to speed in the Merc world, but I can't gauge if the V.P. is a motor one would want in their boat. Is this motor going the way of the OMC motors (hard to find parts/expensive), or is it on par with the Merc for service/parts?
Marine Parts Express created this customized parts list for the engine model you selected. All are genuine Volvo Penta parts and Volvo Penta of the Americas, Inc. warrants that new or factory exchange parts and accessories will be free from defects in material or workmanship for a period of one year. We have translated some of the hard-to-understand part names into easier names. You will however see the original Volvo Penta part name when you order. If there is an engine serial number in the notes box, it refers to the SN break. If the part number doesn't match what you see on your part, it may be that the part number has been superceded. Check with us if you have questions. Click on the part number to see our discounted price and how to order.

OMC 5.8-liters are four-stroke engines with eight cylinders. Gear ratio is 1.41-to-1. [links]
The Outboard Marine Corporation (OMC) was a well-known producer of marine outboard engines and stern drives in the 1970s and 1980s, competing mainly with MerCruiser. Problems with the company's Cobra line of stern drives, however, resulted in a widespread recall in the late 80s and the company eventually went out of business. OMC engines and stern drives are no longer produced, but many are still used. OMC's 1993 line included several 5.8-liter outboard engines that differ only in their horsepower rating, which ranges from 235 to 290 horsepower. All other engine specs are identical. more
The 1993 OMC 5.8-liter engines operate at a minimum of 4,000 rpm at wide open throttle (WOT) and 4,400 maximum rpm at WOT. more
