With a towing vehicle stopping such a weight (of both tow vehicle itself and the trailer) can be difficult. And thus trailer brakes are need when such a combination is moving on road.

The first rule you should follow here is follow law. Trailer brakes are mandatory in many states and the weight limitations vary for them. So get your weight checked and then if its above the limitations than don’t skip the brakes. If you are buying a second hand or used trailer than makes sure the brakes are installed. In case if your weight is under the limitation then may be you can skip the brakes. But still with this situation its always better to have the brakes installed. The trailer may work very well and t can be safe depending on various other conditions as well. Some of the things that make a lot of difference includes below,

The electric trailer have electromagnetic drums that are actuated with the help of controller from placed inside the towing vehicle. You can control actuating the electromagnetic drums of the brakes through the controller, it uses the electric energy from the towing vehicle and then helps stopping the trailer. No matter what speed you have, its difficult to stop the combination of vehicle and trailer without trailer brakes. here

A travel trailer can have two types of breaks installed in them. The brakes can be either electric or hydraulic ones or the surge type of brakes. more

I just finished adding brakes to my 5x8 utility trailer, which turned out to be surprisingly easy to do. So I thought I would post a report:

I found a 10”drum brake kit for sale at Northern Tool for $249, and used a coupon to reduce that to $229 plus tax. No shipping charge, since I picked it up at their store.

I have been thinking for years that having brakes on my trailer might be a prudent investment, even though they are not required in the states that I use the trailer in. My trailer is a 5x8 utility trailer that weighs fully loaded 2200 lbs. I recently purchased a new tow vehicle that has an integral trailer brake controller with an anti-sway feature. So I thought I should investigate how hard it would be to add brakes to my trailer.

Where the laws regarding braking systems are controlled by the state and may differ, most of the laws are the same across Australia.

Trailers that are less than 2000kg GTM must have brakes that operate on at least one axle, and brakes other than override systems must be operated from the driver’s seat.

Part of towing a caravan or trailer safely is ensuring that the braking systems are adequate.

The load rating for disc brakes range from 1500kg to 2500kg per axle and have larger bearing arrangements and larger rotors as the load capacity increases. Caliper sizes normally remain the same across the range although on the heavier duty models there is sometimes the option of a double yoke axle for fitting an additional caliper. (You will need to upgrade to a larger master cylinder reservoir on your coupling.if more than one set of calipers are used)

A step up from mechanical braking is hydraulic override/surge braking and overall this system is an improvement in both braking efficiency and control. The hydraulic master cylinder attached to the spring dampened coupling softens the impact of the coupling motion and gives a slightly more proportional amount of braking control.

Air over hydraulics are similar to the EOH method of braking, but use compressed air to pump hydraulic fluid to the brakes. Air over hydraulic systems are operated via pressure sensitive brake pedal activated controllers (see above). here

When the tow vehicle brakes are applied the controller gets a signal from the tow vehicles brake lights and then sends a pre-determined amount of power (manually set prior to towing based on trailer weight) to the trailer brakes. There is then a timed delay to allow the braking effect to ramp up to full braking power (normally less than 1 second ) more

Hydraulic drum brakes tend to have smoother braking over disc brakes, and this makes them especially suited to trailers where the cartage of livestock or fragile loads is undertaken.

All proportional controllers have an emergency/panic slider to allow the driver to manually apply the brakes if required. This is particularly useful if your trailer is prone to “trailer sway” and enables the brakes to be applied to the trailer only, and hopefully getting the trailer corrected quickly and safely.
In cab proportional controllers are the only system suitable for trailers over 2500kg GVM (NZ) and 2000kg GTM (Aust.) and are normally used for trailers fitted with electric drum brakes. more
