Disar Models recently released a very promising looking new kit of the Hermione, a 32-gun Concord-class French Navy frigate. Built in 1779, she was designed for speed and it is said that she was one of the first French Navy ships to be copper sheathed. The ship is most well known for carrying the Marquis de Lafayette to the newly declared United States, where he served as a Major General commanding American troops in the American Revolution under Washington. here

The new kit from Disar Model is a big 1/72 scale kit, making it about 6″ longer than the Atesania Latina kit. So, fans of big models should appreciate this one. here

The hull planking went pretty well, but required some pretty careful work. The planks are very nicely pre-shaped, but they still have to be bent to fit the curve of the hull. It also takes a bit of care to glue the planks only to the ribs, and not to the framework of the temporary former.

The kit includes turned brass cannon, laser-cut frames, many laser-cut parts, pre-sewn sails, and an 84-page, full-color instruction booklet, and more. here

HMS Duke of Wellington was a 131-gun first-rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy. Launched in 1852, she was symptomatic of an era of rapid technological change in the navy, being powered both by sail and steam. First christened HMS Windsor Castle, she was the first of a class of four that represented the ultimate development of the wooden three-decker ship of the line which had been the mainstay capital ship in naval warfare for 200 years. After receiving screw propulsion during her construction the ship was launched on 14 September 1852. On that day the Duke of Wellington died, and she was subsequently re-named in his honour and provided with a new figurehead in the image of the duke. When completed on 4 February 1853, HMS Duke of Wellington was, on paper at least, the most powerful warship in the world (and would remain so until the completion of the French Bretagne in 1855) and the largest yet built for the Royal Navy, twice the size of Nelson's HMS Victory and with a far bigger broadside. She was 240 feet (73.1 m) long, displaced 5,892 tons, and carried 131 cannon, weighing a total of 382 tons and mainly firing 32 lb balls.

In the previous post I included a number of infographics of various types of warships from the Age of Sail, the period lasting from the 16th to the mid-19th century where naval warfare was dominated by sailing ships armed with cannons. In this post I will describe briefly some of the the largest, most powerful and advanced warships of that era. here

OcCre's Buccaneer kit is a designed for beginning ship modelers, but offers the look of the classic pirate ship. The kit features a double-planked hull using a beautiful looking finish wood, and even includes a set of pre-sewn sails and, of course, a Jolly Roger flag. [links]

HMS Bounty was an armed merchant ship in service with the British Royal Navy, and it was on a mission to collect breadfruit plants in the South Pacific, but the ship is most well known for the infamous mutiny against Captain Bligh by a crew led by Fletcher Christian (wikipedia entry). This 3-masted square-riggers is another popular subject among ship model builders. here
