Since the oil is not highly pressurized, I suspect the brass fitting into a drilled throughway would be sufficient. here

Something to figure out as I go along.

I am expecting a throughway in the outdrive, but am not certain which models have it predrilled.

it will probably seem more clear when I have the outdrive removed.
I am thoughtful on future outdrive removals when this thing is connected. [links]

Not to drift this off topic, but why dont they make those fittings out of brass or whatever, instead of cheap plastic?

From Pittsburgh to Snap-On, from Mityvac to Stevens. You can spend as much as you want on a pressure tester or you can make your own. (We will talk about that in just a little bit. more

While spinning the shafts and looking for air bubbles. If you do see air bubbles, you will need to change out those seals that you find to be leaking.

Here is an article showing the exact process for Changing Out Prop Shaft Seals! As well as a video for a demonstration:

Boat engine gear cases or lower units are super expensive. And they don’t have any kind of warning system to prevent failure. When a gear case develops a leak, it leaks!

It is always best to pressure test the drive to find the source of the leak, unless you can see it coming directly out of something. more

Is it leaking directly from the seals that are visible around the propshaft, or is is just coming out of the exhaust area? If it is right at the propshaft seal, the bearing carrier has to be pulled and the seals driven out and replaced. You need some special tools to do it. If it is coming out the exhaust cavity, it could be several things. Water pump base, o-ring on bearing carrier, seal in upper unit. The water pump base is pretty easy, but the others require special tools.

Getting the prop off is the first step. Once it is off you can see the prop shaft seal. If it is not coming from there, then the most likely spot is the water pump base.

To pressure test, you need to put about 15 psi into the unit. They make specific pumps to do it, but you might be able to use a bicycle tire pump and the fitting from the gear lube pump. Once you have pressure into it, you can listen for a leak. You may have to separate the halves and pressure test each half seperately. You have to plug the oil passage when pressure testing the halves separately.
