I have a 2003 Fisher bass boat that had a 40 HP Mercury 4 stroke on it. I want to remove that motor and replace it with a '97 Mercury 75 HP 2 stroke from my pontoon boat. Will the 2003 4 stroke controls work on the 1997 2 stroke motor? [links]
I was thinking of doing the swap myself but I will take it to my mechanic if I chicken out or if I need new controls.
If I do have to get new controls and crap, whose got the cheeeeeapest dealie in town?
I think I just bought a 4-stroke powerplant for the mini-Parker and I was wondering if anybody knows if my existing Yamaha cables/controls will work on a Mercury product? I think these mercury engines are essentially yamaha products with different stickers and paint jobs. [links]
The motor is a 2004 Mercury 4-stroke 75 HP (I know, I know, it's a bit small, but it was too good a deal to pass up and I ain't worried about not making the 390 in half an hour).
The motor operator's guide is a source of much information concerning your motor. In addition to the basic operating and maintenance procedures, the first few pages carry the motor's serial number. The manual may even include the code number that enables a locksmith to cut a new key. Larger marinas may make duplicate keys based on this code number, too. Once you have the motor's serial number, though, any Mercury Marine dealer can find out the code to make a duplicate key. more
The motor itself carries the serial number in two places, in case you don't have the motor operator's manual available. Take a look on the left side of the motor's swivel bracket. You should see an aluminized plate that tells you the motor's horsepower, model number, serial number, the model year and other information. If this plate has been painted over, remove the top cover from the motor and look on the right side of the motor. You'll see a tag attached to the motor that carries the same information. Again, you can take the serial number to a Mercury Marine dealer and they'll cut a new key for you. more
If you have no keys for your Merc outboard, you have a problem. Fortunately, there are several ways to solve the problem. Most of them involve little or no damage to your boat or your Mercury outboard. Whether you've lost the keys to a motor you've had for some time, or purchased a motor without a key, a bit of investigation may give you everything you need.
If your Mercury is equipped with a remote throttle/key switch or throttle/shifter/key switch combination, the code you need to have a new key made is inside, located on the body of the ignition switch. All you need to do is remove the two screws that hold the remote control to the boat, if the control is attached to a boat, or the four screws on the back of the remote unit. Once you remove the four screws, separate the face of the remote unit from its back panel. The ignition switch is the cylinder located near the throttle handle.
The same solid warranty coverage you get on Mercury® engines applies to Mercury controls and rigging components. If your builder or dealer uses genuine Mercury Precision Parts® when installing the new engine on your boat, you get warranty coverage that matches the total warranty of your engine. Up to an additional two years of control and rigging component coverage – based on the engine purchased. [links]

Mercury's patented Joystick Piloting System delivers 360 degree directional control. The Skyhook Digital Anchoring System holds your boat in a fixed position regardless of wind or current. Unlike its predecessors, who all used traditional two-stroke engines, this new unit had a modern four-stroker inside. But despite that, it was quite lighter and more powerful than any comparable two-stroke outboard at the time. The technology that makes such superior performance possible traces its roots to the world of aircraft engines and automotive motorsports. here
As an additional advantage, this engine type has considerably fewer components and moving parts, which reduces the probability of a breakdown. On the downside, these outboards burn more fuel, produce more emissions, and may even leave an oily trail behind them since a two-stroke engine uses a mixture of fuel and oil for both lubrication and combustion. Still, these shortcomings had a minimal impact on their popularity, especially among recreational users, despite competitive four-stroke variants being widely available. more
While forced induction ensures superb accelerations and improves fuel efficiency, it also adds mechanical complexity and may affect reliability. In addition, these supercharged units require premium-quality fuel, which may not always be available. On the other hand, Yamaha outboards are generally lighter, thanks to advanced technologies and materials. [links]
Having access to a Yamaha service manual will also provide helpful information and diagnostic/replacement procedures to make sure you save even more money if something was to go awry. If you are looking for a quality repair manual, make sure to take a look here. They’ve got manuals for literally everything.
Both manufacturers are neck-to-neck when it comes to warranty, both offering 3 years limited warranty. It’s also the same with controls. Both Yamaha and Mercury have digital controls for all their bigger units. As for pricing, this can differ a lot depending on the dealer, promotions, and so on. But regardless of that, there is not much price difference between these two manufacturers across their ranges.
