"Its fiberglass Multi-Hull Cat-V has five lifting points, letting it glide across the water and can bank in a turn like a performance boat should. With this design, the Razor can achieve speeds with half the horsepower of conventional pontoon producers and has lots of room to move around and be comfortable on the water, this boat is loaded with features from bow to stern. Wakeboard tower with speakers, onboard kitchenette with gas grill, a changing room, and tons of storage are just a few."

With the surge in popularity of pontoon boats - esp. performance tritoons which we all know are so versatile and fun - more boat makers are not only trying to get in the game but also gain an advantage. It's not enough to have a tritoon with aluminum logs any more. But, of course, in doing so are they blurring the line that used to divide pontoons from other types of hulls - deck, v-hull, cat, etc. more

So my question is, is this a pontoon boat or something else?

It's interesting for sure, though I do doubt one of their key claims - that it has a smooth ride. How can anything with a flattened V, step-hull style stern like that have a smooth ride in the chop?

It’s a humorous stereotype and is obviously meant to be a joke. Unfortunately, this example is based on a predicament far more real, and not nearly as funny. A boat company representative we’re acquainted with was on hand when this thumping occurred, and could have easily answered the man’s hull questions—if only the man had any. “I’ve seen it before,” the salesman later told us. “Some people just don’t like talking about the hull, because they see it as a kind of an enigma.” Truth is, it doesn’t have to be.

As a general rule, these hulls tend to be more stable than full V-hull boats. Each manufacturer has its own way of getting the best performance out of semi-Vs by incorporating different slopes off the bow, and by use of chines. more

My FIL was about to buy a Ranger Z522 from ole boy's shop on Florida in Denham Springs, but head some bad news today. He was at his camp on Toldeo talking to a fiberglass shop owner and he told my FIL that the brand new hulls are cracking very easily when only bumping and working their way through/around logs/stumps. He said that they crack long ways and its not uncommon to see a 3-4' crack.

FIL called another boat repair shop in Leesville and a guy there told him the same thing.

This lead to Bertram and Hatteras becoming arch rivals with Hatteras ultimately emerging as the winner. While the Bertram crowd rather arrogantly looked down their noses at the folks in High Point, Hatteras sales soared while Bertrams remained relatively flat. Until the '89 recession when they went to zero from which they never recovered. more

More that three decades later, the downfall of Bertram was probably that Bertrams ended up being built by Cubans for Cubans, for the later management made the disastrous mistake of concentrating solely on the sport fishing market by completely abandoning the cruising market. When the '89 recession hit, they ended up being in the wrong niche market, from which this large operation could not recover.

Unless you're got the bucks, beware of buying diesel Bertrams. They are hard on engines and keeping them going gets downright expensive. The best values for the budget conscious are with the gas engine boats. But make sure that your choice isn't underpowered because over-worked gas engines don't last long.
