Catalina’s American bison, sometimes referred to as buffalo, are descendants of a small herd left on the island by a movie crew in the 1920s. Today the Catalina Island Conservancy maintains Catalina’s American bison herd at about 150 to protect both the bison and the island’s landscape.
The boat has a draft of 5.00 ft (1.52 m) with the centerboard down and 1.67 ft (0.51 m) with the centerboard retracted. It has a hull speed of 5.9 kn (10.93 km/h).
A good sailing boat and a very good cruiser a used Catalina 27 in decent shape often checks off all the requirements a cruising sailor on a budget is looking for. A few people have even sailed these hearty little boats across oceans and around the world although they’re not really “bluewater” boats.
The Catalina 22 became one of the most popular sailboats ever built and active fleets dot the country on lakes, rivers and oceans. “The Catalina can be easily fixed and parts are available, no matter how old the boat,” Douglas said. “They’re excellent project boats, easy to sail, and they’re affordable.”
As we said in the introduction, Luhrs boats aren’t made anymore so you won’t buy a new one. This isn’t a big deal if you’re in the market for a used boat, but if you want a new one, you’ll either have to go with another company or hope that the company decides to bring them back once more.
Picking between two harbors and Avalon depends on what you want to do. Avalon has a lot more amenities and is a little bit busier. Two harbors pretty much has a bar/restaurant and a general store. Both have beaches where you can rent kayaks etc. more
Luhrs Boats history can be traced back to the 1830’s when a a man by the name of Henry Luhrs immigrated to the United States from Germany. Henry almost immediately became involved in the marine trade upon his arrival, supplying ships in New York City. Luhrs eventually owned his own chandlery, selling supplies and equipment for boats and ships and he even bought a ship of his own, The Sophia R. Luhrs. His grandson, another Henry, shared the same love of the sea and continued the family heritage by building and repairing boats on the New Jersey coast.
The family finally reclaimed the Luhrs name in 1985 and began production under it in 1986. A new production facility was opened in St. Augustine, Florida in 1987 to accommodate the brand's growth and the demand for Luhrs boats. The St. Augustine facility has since been expanded several times and a new facility in Midway, GA was added in 1999 to help meet demand. The Luhrs Corporation, now employee owned, continues to serve the needs of sportfisherman by building some of the best mid-size fishing boats in the world.
About 100 years after Henry Luhrs started his business, his grandson, also a Henry who had a love for the sea, opened a small shipyard in Morgan, New Jersey. There, he continued his family heritage by building and repairing boats. Soon Henry's shipyard grew into a thriving business which he named the Henry Luhrs Sea Skiff Company. As the company grew, Henry’s sons became involved and before they knew it business had boomed into production of over 1200 boats a year.
“We have the first Mainship trawler being built here in Alachua now in time for the Miami show, and we continue to build Gemini catamarans on an OEM basis,” Peterson said in an email today. more
Luhrs Corp. announced that new investors plan to build 25- to 50-foot boats again at St. Augustine Marine, which is not to be confused with the plant at which Luhrs used to manufacture boats in St. Augustine, Fla.
Luhrs, which halted production in 2008, was once under the umbrella of the now defunct Luhrs Marine Group, which had its headquarters and main manufacturing plant at Millville, N.J., and consisted of Silverton Marine Corp., Mainship Corp., Luhrs Corp., Hunter Marine Corp. and five additional subsidiaries.
Luhrs sportfishing boats was recently acquired from the Marlow acquisition group by the Florida-based investing firm MB Marine Industries LLC, named for CEO Mario Benedetti.
The boats will continue being called Luhrs.
Roger Yarborough will manage the new line, which will be composed of original molds as well as some prototypes, according to the St. Augustine Record. more
That’s according to John Peterson, now president of Marlow-Hunter LLC, who told Soundings Trade Only that the Luhrs property in St. Augustine and the Silverton property in Millville, N.J., are still for sale under the Morgan Industries bankruptcy.
MB Marine Industries is committed to building Luhrs with “the highest quality, craftsmanship and seaworthiness,” stated a post on Luhrs’ website.

“Fishing boats and the marketing to that segment of the boating arena, after careful analysis, was not part of our strategy at the moment, and thus we sold Luhrs to focus on the demographics of the sailing marketplace at this time, including trawlers, a natural extension of the sailing lifestyle,” Peterson said. more
