He also tested the fuel efficiency by running his boat powered by a two-stroke engine alongside one with a four-stroke engine as a control. For the test run, while Moody’s boat consumed 34 litres of fuel, the control boat used 36 litres.
Moody had his two-stroke engine tested and found that it generates up to 25% more torque than four-strokes of the same capacity.

Neither Yamaha or Mercury includes these two-stroke models in its catalogs or on its websites. Mercury has allocated about 85 percent of its traditional two-stroke production to boat builders, but the rest are available through dealers. The Yamaha two-strokes seem to be more-readily available. Joe Customer looking to repower should be able to buy any of these models from a cooperative dealer as a "loose outboard," the industry term for a motor sold in the box, rather than on a transom.
There are many disadvantages to the old two-strokes, or course. Not everyone swoons to the scent of two-stroke exhaust fumes, for starters. And these motors will burn up to 30 percent more fuel than a low-emissions model. They can be harder to start, won't idle or troll as smoothly, and make a lot more noise. The cost savings is considerable. For example, the venerable 2.5-liter V6 Mercury 150 EFI has a list price of $9,925 with a 20-inch shaft suitable for a bass boat. A low-emissions Merc 150 OptiMax two-stroke is priced at $12,650, while the supercharged four-stroke Mercury 150 Verado is $12,650. On the Yamaha side, a 90-hp two-stroke with a 20-inch shaft is $7,170, while a similar four-stroke Yamaha F90 is $9,350. The other key advantage of the two-stroke models is light weight. The Yamaha two-stroke 150TLR weighs 358 pounds, 44 pounds less than a Yamaha F150. If you are repowering a boat that can't handle the weight of a four-stroke, one of these two-strokes might be an alternative to consider.
Until recently, I figured that 2006 would be my last chance to put a brand-new, old-school, two-stroke outboard on my transom; that clean-air rules would put us in a permanent state of low-emissions. But I was wrong. You can still buy a traditional two-stroke outboard from Mercury Marine (www.mercmarine.com) or Yamaha (www.yamaha-motor.com), if you know where to look and who to ask. And if you don't live in California, where these motors are not available.
However, we can’t really point a finger on which outboard motor is better based on this information alone. Durability and reliability are also affected by how individual owners maintain and treat their boats, regardless if its two-stroke or four-stroke. So, with proper handling and maintenance, you can expect your outboard motor to last more than a decade.
On the other hand, a two-stroke engine is ideal for off-shore fishing in rough weathers. It provides immediate kick and instant acceleration when facing chops or when running through a bar.
If you want high-powered outboards for your boat, Mercury Verado 350, 400, and 400R are your best options. These products have some of the highest horsepower available right now in the market. Not to worry though, there are good four-stroke outboards options for smaller boats. There’s the Mercury FourStroke 75, 90, and 115. All are equipped with Computer Controlled Multi-Port Electronic Fuel Injection. here

The DF325A is another good Suzuki outboard you can choose. According to Suzuki, it’s the only outboard engine with more than 300hp output that can run on 91 RON fuel, a regular fuel in key markets. more
This Canadian brand is known for its range of two-stroke E-Tec outboard engines, the only maker in Australia with environmental certification. The Evinrude outboards have direct fuel-injection technology, which makes them compliant to the new outboard emissions standards. more

Unlike the old-school 2-Stroke no fuel wafts into the combustion chamber of the fuel-injected Evinrude E-TEC to inadvertently spill out the exhaust port. Instead, fuel injects directly into the combustion chamber in a precise amount and at the split second required.
However, sentimental recollections aside, it’s said that changes within the outboard market are on the horizon. More and more traditional outboards (like the older technology 2-Stroke) are being replaced by “cleaner” engines that comply with new 2014 emission standards.
Suzuki’s DF60 is the lightest and most compact designed engine it its class. It replaces the current 4-cylinder single overhead cam model. The DF60 is 941 cc and weighs a mere 104 kg. [links]
A recent study by U.S. scientist Russell Long revealed that the world’s conventional 2-Stroke motor market generates about 1.1 billion pounds of hydrocarbon emissions each year. He said that the high emissions are attributes to the design inefficiency of the old 2-Stroke motor, which has remained essentially unchanged since the 1940s.
