Ive got an I/O and i for sure would not recommend a 17.5' boat, especially if youll be driving in the bay in chop. If you want a decent wake and good rough water performance dont buy anything smaller than 20' I/O or I/B. That being said you need a proper motor for that big of a boat, V8-no less. My I/O has a great wake and drives great but it all has to do with how you set it up. My prop cost around what a comp boat prop cost, i have perfect pass, i have sacks (just like comp boats). You can get away with an 18' boat but be sure of this one fact, DONT BUY IT WITH A 4 CYLINDER ENGINE. You will add weight even if it is just people. Its your first boat i presume so you dont want to tie yourself down to this thing for 10+ years. Try saving or going in on a used boat with some friends = more money for maintenance, etc. Just set up rules for how everyone will maintain and when you will use it. First boats can be great or they can turn you away from boating for the rest of your life.
