The Kvichak River is the drainage for Lake Illiamna, and what that means for anglers is world class Rainbow Trout fishing. You also have access to many of the other local rivers like the Nushagak, Eggigek System, Naknek, and the Alagnak - all well known for their runs of Salmon and their resident populations of wild Rainbow Trout, Dolly Varden, Arctic Char, Arctic Grayling, and sometimes the massive Northern Pike.

What is the fishing season like in Ireland?

Many people wait until late in the season to fish terrestrial imitators like beetle or ant flies. However, these work exceptionally well in the warm afternoons of late spring when the water is calm and the sun is bright. Foam beetles are great prospecting flies and can be used throughout the season–not just when it’s hot. For a highly visible beetle, spring for a Quick Sight Beetle that has a permanent fluorescent spot on it’s back so you can see it without straining.? here

Crayfish flies aren’t a must-have for all fly-fishermen, but are a good fly to use when others just aren’t working for you. Crayfish add a new type of prey to your tackle box, offering a new “food source” to fish when they might not be hungry for anything else you have to offer. In saltwater fishing, crustacean flies are significant, but in freshwater, crayfish are equally omnipresent. This fly should be used along the bottom of the water to help initiate predatory behavior in fish. [links]

This fly is the quintessential mayfly imitator. With a dark brown color and slim shape, it is deceptive in its imitation as a mayfly and moves quickly in the water. This fly is easy to tie at home for beginning fly-tyers, as it can be kept slender and made out of natural materials. It’s not a flashy tie, but it mimics a wide variety of bait species and has an established reputation for catching loads of fish.

This is a streamer fly with unique black, yellow, and white coloring. Streamer flies move quickly through the current and work well with other presentations. It was originally developed during the Great Depression in Maine to help hook large brown trout. A simple fly, it can also be used on steelhead and salmon. It works especially well when dead-drifting right below a dam or similar structure, as it imitates a stunned or dead bait fish and attracts hordes of hungry salmon and trout. [links]

The best known and classic form of fly fishing is what is known as dry fly fishing. The fisherman uses an artificial fly, which he casts so that it will float on the water. The fly will pass over the fish, which will hopefully rise up and bite it. The fisherman then tries to control the fish's attempts to escape, tiring it enough to bring it in to be retrieved from the water with a landing net. Many anglers prefer this type of fly fishing because everything can be seen - the angler casts at a fish he can see, the fly is easily visible on the surface of the water, and he can see the fish take the fly. The only drawback to this is that trout and other fish tend to feed underwater, and therefore are not as likely to come up to take a dry fly. more

Fly fishing is a type of fishing that involves using an artificial fly. It is different from traditional fishing methods in that fly anglers cast a hook that generally has bits of feather, fur, foam, yarn, or other similar material attached using thread to form what is referred to as a'fly', as opposed to using worms or other bait.

While most types of fish can be caught on a fly, the most common are the trout, salmon, chars, and most game fish. Trout are by far the most popular, since trout feed and live in shallow waters and eat small insects. here

The second form of fly fishing is what is known as nymph fishing. When the flies lay eggs in the river or lake, the eggs hatch out as nymphs, which make their way to the surface, where they hatch into a fly. Therefore, nymph fishing utilizes imitations of different nymphs that are weighted to stay below the surface of the water. This type of fishing is often considered more challenging, as all the action takes place beneath the surface.
