Five-pearl Eden Rock is one of the more popular resorts on St. Barth’s, and with good reason: it has two top-notch restaurants, playfully unique rooms with luxurious amenities, and a lively location in the island's downtown area that attracts chic travelers from all over the world. The prices are certainly nothing to sneeze at, but the hotel’s attention to detail (like personalized welcome notes) is what helps to maintain their reputation as one of the top resorts in the Caribbean.

Scrub Island Resort, Spa & Marina is the perfect spot for BVI travelers who want it all at their fingertips -- and who don’t mind shelling out the cash to have it that way. The stunning 61-room luxury property is located on its own private island, but offers nearly every amenity available. Guests have access to a 55-slip deep-water marina, three beautiful pools, two gorgeous beaches, a clifftop spa and marina-view workout facility, and three restaurants and bars. To top it all off, rooms are huge and tastefully decorated with dark woods and island-inspired accents. Many have full kitchens, separate living and dining rooms, and laundry facilities. The only downside to Scrub is its massive sprawl and hilly terrain, which can make getting around pretty difficult. here

Accessed via a 30-minute boat ride from Providenciales, this 1,000-acre resort on a private island is the definition of tranquility. With an incredible infinity-edge pool, world-renowned COMO Shambhala Spa, waterfront Balinese-style villas, doting service, and more than three miles of pristine beaches, it's easily one of the most luxurious and romantic options in the Caribbean. But hefty price tags put it out of reach for many, and the rare level of privacy comes as the cost of convenience -- a boat commute is required to reach any nightlife or shopping. more

What's it like to sleep in fashion icon Oscar de la Renta's bedroom? Take a cocktail in his living room? Or sun on his patio? Staying at the 30-room Tortuga Bay hotel is the closest most people will get to knowing, since de la Renta designed the entire property. If the resort is any indication, the answer is that it's posh, yet profoundly relaxing. The hotel offers amazing service (including preferential treatment at Punta Cana Airport), an on-site nature reserve, several superb restaurants, and three world-class golf courses. here

The 21-room GoldenEye is hands down Jamaica's hippest and most luxurious resort. It's also one of the island's most historic, as the former home of Ian Fleming, and the hideaway at which the author scribed all 14 of his James Bond novels. Today, the property, which reopened in 2010 after an extensive $50 million renovation, includes stunning cottages and villas overlooking a private beach and lagoon, as well as two happening restaurants, two pools, a tree house spa, and an extensive roster of on-site activities. The rates might cause some to flinch, but those who can afford it will find little cause for complaint.

Located in the stunning St. Martin area, Belmond La Samanna is one of the top 5 star Caribbean resorts. On their website, they describe it as a “garden paradise” precisely because the beauty of the place is almost unpaired. here

Down in St. Lucia, Sandals Grande St. Lucian has introduced nine of its own over-the-water villas with the same inclusive luxuries (including lit glass floors that allow for ocean peeping any time of day). And 12 new bungalows will soon be added to Sandals South Coast, on Jamaica’s northwestern coast, this November.

Further east, Sandals, that adults-only all-inclusive resort machine, is starting to make its own mark. Sandals Royal Caribbean Resort recently debuted five overwater bungalows off Jamaica’s Montego Bay, each with floating decks that double as living rooms, infinity pools, soaking tubs for two, private butlers and water taxis for getting to and from the resort. All is yours to enjoy if you can ever take yourself away from your personal hammock, which hangs suspended over the water. One warning: if you’re expecting to score the same kind of deal Sandals properties are typically known for, think again. These bungalows cost upwards of $1,000 a night.

All that space (800 square feet, to be exact) allows for roomy outdoor showers and plenty of nooks for enjoying your 24-hour room service and premium drinks (part of the all-inclusive rate).

The first overwater bungalows to debut close to home? The Palafitos at El Dorado Maroma by Karisma, on a sunny stretch along Mexico’s Riviera Maya. This adults-only resort took design inspiration from the country’s Aztec roots (whose ancestral communities built their homes over Lake Texcoco in the capital city of Tenochtitlán). Each “palafito” is set on stilts over the Caribbean Sea and features furniture made from local Zapote wood and Mexican white granite, along with thatched palapa-style roofs and glass floor panels where you can spy native fish darting by. Overwater bungalow-style retreats have long remained exclusive to the waters of exotic, far-flung idylls like Tahiti, Bora Bora, and the Maldives. Granted, the region is gorgeous—the stuff of honeymoon dreams—but the multiple long-haul flights you have to take to get to these isolated islands? Not so glamorous. At long last, the experience we’ve been pining for is finally getting closer to home. here

Half Moon in Jamaica has been a family favorite for the last 20+ years. They take the average hotel kids club to the next level with their replica of a traditional Caribbean village complete with a kiddie pool. There is plenty to do elsewhere on the property too – watersports, tennis/squash, and a world-class equestrian center.

The Buccaneer Hotel knows families. The hotel has been family-owned and operated for over 70 years. The 340-acre property offers half a dozen sports, three beaches, and accommodation options for every size family.
