Match a drill bit from a drill bit set to the shaft size of the sheet metal screw. Secure a drill bit matching the size of the screw shaft that leaves the threads around the screw exposed. more

Set the drill motor direction to "Reverse." Drill a hole at the pencil-marked location with the drill motor. Remove the drill bit. Secure a drill bit 1/16-inch larger than the drilled hole. Drill a 1/32-inch deep hole at the entry point of the hole drilled through the fiberglass. This relieves stress in the thin gel coat covering the hull of your fiberglass boat. [links]

Cover the hull of the fiberglass boat with masking tape where the sheet metal screw will be placed. Mark the location of the hole on the masking tape with a pencil.

This has been a humbling experience.

What do ya'll recommend for a drill bit size for #12 ss self tappers? Is there a lubcricant I should use on the screws when I try to drive them? If so, will the lubricant interfere with the boatlife caulk I am using to bed the teak to the glass?

I have had great success using the plastic inserts (saw it at the boat show a few years back) for putting screws in concrete or brick walls. Drill for the insert, install the insert, install the part, enjoy.

No matter which screws you decide to use on your fiberglass project, always remember to keep the size and feature list in mind before making your final decision. Any of the options we discussed above will work wonderfully for almost any project, as long as they are used with the right tools and on the right material.

One of the questions we see all the time is the question of size when it comes to the best screws for fiberglass. If you’re installing something with pre-drilled holes, make sure you use the screw size the instructions specify for the safest and strongest hold. Size really does matter when you’re working with a large or heavy piece. [links]
