Be prepared to be converted if you don’t yet own a Canada Goose jacket, is all we’re saying. The ultimate best winter coat for extreme weather is the Canada Goose Chateau Shell Hooded Down Parka. A dark green colour will help the adventurer in you to tackle the cold and a 650-fill power down combined with fleece-lined pockets will promise that you never feel anything other than delightfully toasty. Without sounding too cliche, this isn’t just a Moncler Vanoise Logo-Appliquéd Nylon Quilted Hooded Down Gilet. It’s also a Moncler gilet filled with enough natural warmth that you’ll convince yourself you’ll never need an armed jacket again. It also comes in a sleek, black colour, adding an instant touch of cool to whatever you’re wearing alongside it. Gilets are a great transitional staple that you’ll wear mostly in the Autumn, which means now’s the time to buy one. Just think of it as a very early Christmas present to yourself. here

Wool coats and parkas will keep you warmest, along with those that have a down rating of more than 500. Leather is also a great choice for keeping you warm during winter. Poly fabrics, when layered appropriately, can be a strong option. You’ll also want to keep an eye out for wicking material, which will absorb moisture and keep you warm without feeling sweaty.

Many winter coats are water-resistant rather than waterproof. Which means they’ll tackle the drips from a light drizzle but won’t offer much protection when the heavens open. If you’re looking for a winter jacket that’ll protect you from the rain, look for one that’s waterproof rather than just resistant.

What fans say: "Love this coat! It is by far the warmest coat I own. I wore it all the time the past two winters I’ve had it, in Utah and in Michigan (down to negative temperatures). I normally wear size large and it is true to size, with room to wear sweaters under. I’m 6’0 and it covers my butt, which is nice." here

While this shorter-length down jacket doesn't offer quite as much coverage as its full-length counterparts, it's still a great pick for frigid temperatures. Designed with an 80 percent duck down and 20 percent feather filling, this soft coat is lightweight yet insulated. Both the hem and the cuffs have nylon-bound elastic to seal in your body heat. And, the hood can be easily detached from the jacket whenever you don't need it. Like the ski jacket above, this coat has a media port where you can easily string your headphones to listen to music or a podcast without exposing yourself to ice cold air. It even has five pockets (including two deep interior pockets), so you can bring everything you need with you. Snag it in one of seven neutral colors. [links]

This beloved ski jacket has all the makings of one of the warmest jackets in the world. It's made with a 2,400-tex polyester fibre (for reference tex refers to the density of the fibers, and is measured by the mass of the material per 1000 meters). That means this ski jacket is dense enough to keep heat trapped inside when the weather chills. It also has adjustable cuffs that are made with elastic to retain warmth, and an internal drawcord hem to lock the cold out. While it's advertised as waterproof, most reviewers say it's better for lighter rain storms. This jacket has two zippered hand pockets, one zippered chest pocket, one internal pocket, and an earphone line where you can string your headphones into your jacket. Thousands of skiers and non-skiers love this jacket for freezing cold weather. Even better, you can get it in one of 11 different colors. here

What fans say: "The lining is perfect. It is quilted and soft and it keeps you warm. The hood is perfect for light rain or snow. Stylish, cozy, and warm. I was impressed. A coat like this is hard to find! Very happy!"

For a hypoallergenic coat made without duck or goose feathers, this down alternative puffer really stands up to freezing weather. It has four built-in pockets — two zippered and two slanted pockets to fit all manner of items. This mid-length jacket provides enough coverage to keep your butt and upper thighs from freezing in the cold weather. Like most down and down alternative jackets, this coat isn't waterproof. But the shell is water resistant, which should be enough to get you through a light drizzle or snowstorm. But, what's best about this jacket is its lifetime guarantee. You can exchange this coat for a full refund at any point if it isn't to your liking.

PU coated nylon is famously employed in the Marmot PreCip jackets and most other inexpensive waterproof hard shells. It is not breathable and has a tendency to feel a lot like wearing a rubber bag due to the lack of inner liner material. here

I’ll admit, Sherpa earned some brownie points with me by putting pit zips on this jacket. They’re one of my favorite features and even today, I think too many jackets fail to incorporate this feature.

Waterproof zippers are great but they have a problem – they don’t always keep out all the water. I honestly prefer a zipper cover most of the time. more

Inexpensive hardshells can be a great option on several levels. For backpacking and light winter use such as skiing at a resort, they’re just fine usually. However if you need a helmet compatible hood or plan to use your jacket for advanced sports like climbing or ski touring, you’ll need to cough up cash.

It consists of DWR treated outer fabric, a waterproof and breathable membrane, and an inner mesh lining. While it’s not the best on the market, it’s reliable and well done. more
