Flaming Gorge is an amazing fishery throughout the entire year, but winter tends to bring some unique opportunities here. On the southern end, there will be no ice, and you can expect to catch Rainbow Trout.

Next to the Sailfish season, there are many other reasons to visit Stuart during the winter. South Florida is quite warm during this time of the year, and the days are sunny. You can spend a few relaxing hours strolling around the beautiful beaches and collecting shells, or enjoy miles and miles of hiking trails.

You might also come across Tiger and Brown Trout when fishing the Diamond Lake, but you must release them. The Diamond Lake Resort tends to keep the lake open year-round. If you don’t have all the equipment you need for ice fishing, you can rent it at the resort. [links]

For outdoor enthusiasts, Green Lake during the winter is like paradise. There’s plenty of things you can do here, besides ice fishing. You can go snowshoeing, iceboating, or skating, and ride a snowmobile. Once you get tired and cold from all these activities, you can warm up in one of the many cozy bars and restaurants you’ll find around town. more

However, that’s not what most of the locals get excited about. It’s the ice fishing you can find in the northern parts. In the past several years, Burbot was illegally introduced to the reservoir, and this invasive fish has been causing trouble for other game fish that swim around these waters. That’s why the harvest of Burbot is heavily encouraged. These fish are fun and easy to catch, and they also taste really good.

Join Marlin magazine for a worldwide tour of the best fishing destinations in December and January for blue, black, striped and white marlin, sailfish, swordfish and more. From big numbers to big fish, it's all here. During this time, the bite's on in Costa Rica. Large schools of big Pacific sails can be found harassing baitballs beneath frigate birds and around schools of spinner dolphins within 40 miles of the coast. The fishing can be simply phenomenal: Multiple hookups are the norm, and 10 or more sailfish releases a day are not uncommon. That's Where the Bite Is for December and January!

Don’t let that kind of inertia get the best of you. Whether you’re a young turk thrashing the water or an old-timer who takes fish with more guile than energy, fishing time travels a one-way street. “If the fishing is good, go now,” Lee Wulff told me years ago, “because tomorrow may be too late.”

So here’s a sleeper for you, a big one. Diamond Valley Reservoir in Riverside County near Hemet, southeast of Los Angeles, is the newest and largest water-supply project in the area, having been completed in 2003. The lake is big for this region—4½ miles long by 2 miles wide—and has been generously stocked with both Florida-strain largemouths and rainbow trout, the combination that has made Southern California bass fishing so famous. Diamond Valley is open year-round from sunrise to sunset. There’s a boat ramp, but the types of outboard motors allowed are severely restricted. Rental boats are available at a marina on the lake. For hardcore anglers, myself among them, just about any fishing is better than none at all. It’s not even necessarily a matter of traveling to a warmer climate. It’s the fishing, which is why I sometimes toss piles of fleece and Gore-Tex into the truck and head for a winter steelhead river, where I can wade happily for hours and cast along the edges of icy slush. Sometimes I catch something, but mostly it’s just a way to scratch the deep itch of winter.

Oh, December. The glacial last month of the year stirs visions of snow-covered hills, wooden toboggans, hot cocoa with mini marshmallows and ripping open presents while fluffy powder falls outside. In our youth, December break meant being out of school, frequenting the local skating rink in town and competing against other neighborhood kids in sledding contests. It also meant road trips to visit grandma and grandpa at their residence upstate, or even the occassional weekend at the nearest ski mountain. As we grew older, mulled wine and decadent, spiked eggnog joined the party.

But, of course, there is another way (well many) to spend December still surrounded by friends and family that has nothing to do with freezing temperatures or icy roads.
