One of my thrills was actually drift diving in fast-moving water for about 40 minutes in 40 ft and you might see a stingray whiz by and before you know it, it’s gone and then… amazingly it slows you right down at the end.

Best Suited For: Newly certified to the advanced divers, snorkelers.

Types of Diving: Shallow diving, wall diving, coral reef diving, wreck diving, swim throughs, drift diving, blue hole diving, shark diving, and night diving.

Water Temperature: In the winter and spring, it can be around 75 degrees F/24 degrees C – 80 degrees F/27 degrees C and warm up in the summer as high as 88 degrees F/31 degrees C.

Currents: Drift diving but it’s so easy and all you have to do is just relax and let the current take you and your dive group. The areas that are not drift diving are little current to none.

Visibility: Depending on the weather and if diving close to shore, the sand maybe stirred so visibility will not be good. The further away from shore, visibility is excellent and can be over 100 ft year round.

Best Diving Depths: Shallow – 60 ft. plus!

Can you imagine being in the middle of this wilderness of huge marine life – reefs covered by healthy sponges, black coral, schools of diverse types of fish and 150 miles of mangroves?

Shortly after I left Turks & Caicos, I just had to make a pitstop and dive in the Jardines de la Reina. I did this because of its name and from the urging of my fellow divers and my dream to see whale sharks here.

I did not get to see one whale shark but I hope you’ll get the experience! here

This marine reserve is located about 10 miles from Punta Llorona on Península de Osa. This island boasts multiple dive sites with crystal clear waters, gorgeous reefs and plentiful marine life. Divers will enjoy the turtles, rays, eels and reef fish that frequent this area, with opportunities to see the occasional shark or dolphin. If you go at the right time (July to October), you may even see humpback whales migrating from Antarctica to Costa Rica for the season!

Learning to scuba dive is as thrilling as it is challenging. From learning the hand signals to nailing neutral buoyancy, there’s plenty to worry about on your first few dives without the conditions being harsh. The best sites for beginners are those with low currents, reasonable depth and not too much to navigate (like narrow caverns or winding corals). But just because you’ll want to start at novice-level dives doesn’t mean they have to be boring! Here are our five favorite beginner dives in the Caribbean:

This wide cavern dive can be found in Negril, Jamaica. Covered with giant, orange elephant ear sponges, the stunning underwater topography is a thrilling experience for divers. You can also expect to see eels, turtles, rays and (if you’re lucky) even an octopus or two. But the main attraction is on your way out of the cavern—a large elephant ear sponge formation in the shape of a throne! (Don’t tell Daenerys). [links]

These fins from Mares mix the best of both worlds of split and paddle fins. The design incorporates four veins with channels between them made from high-flexibility plastic. That makes for easy acceleration similar to a traditional split fin design, but the lack of a true split in the center of the fin blade provides the stiffness and power that many divers appreciate when kicking. However, some divers found that they were too stiff after transitioning from split fins despite the welcome gain in kicking power. The fins are open-heel and intended to be worn with booties, but come with a set of comfortable bungee straps. These straps are easy to get on and off, making the fins easier to handle if you’re wearing dive gloves and allows for quick transitions between dives. Plus, the firm tug the straps provide against your heel helps to stabilize against lateral movements in your ankle. The Avanti Quattro Plus fins are made from extremely durable materials and will last a lifetime of diving. Another benefit – these fins are available in a variety of high visibility colors. more

One of the best pieces of gear to invest in for your kit is a pair of scuba diving fins. Having a pair of fins that fits poorly can lead to foot cramps, leg pain, or blisters – none of which you want while you’re underwater. Plus, compared to many other items in your scuba kit, fins are relatively inexpensive relative to the benefits that having the right pair provides.

The Atomic is a speedy and light split fin that provides fast acceleration in the water. The fins are made of an extremely lightweight plastic polymer that makes them less than half the weight of some competing paddle fins like the Dive Rite XT. That means you’re less likely to experience leg fatigue on back-to-back days of diving and the fins are easy to travel with. The lightweight design and reduced muscle expenditure with every kick also reduces your oxygen consumption, so you can stay underwater longer. The trade-off is that while these fins accelerate quickly, they lack the stiffness and resulting power that traditional paddle fins provide. The blade is also relatively narrow, even compared to other split fins, so they do not displace much water with each kick. The Atomic fins are designed with a closed heel, which can make it difficult to wear them with booties – so plan on being restricted to warm-water dives with these fins. However, the foot pocket is very comfortable and will not leave your foot aching with cramps halfway through the dive. more

However, one additional consideration in this decision is how frequently you plan to travel for diving. Full foot fins tend to be smaller and lighter than their open heel counterparts, which can make them a better choice for travel. However, remember that cold feet can quickly end a dive, so be conservative in estimating whether or not you’ll need to wear booties. more

In North America, there’s no place preferred to go over America’s Caribbean, the Florida Keys. Leave the popular depth wrecks like Spiegel Grove, Vandenberg, and Eagle to cutting-edge divers, and hit the shallow reefs to add to your spic and span logbook.

Obviously, you cannot explore the entirety of your energy underwater, so when not scuba diving, Florida has probably the best amusement of the entire US.
