Wake surfing has been increasing in popularity dramatically for the past several years. Whereas at one time, it was relatively unusual to see a wakesurfer in action, now you're likely to see them on.

Choosing the right sized sailboat is a balance. You need a boat that is big enough to handle ocean waves and unpredictable inclement weather, but you also don’t want to end up with a boat that is too big for you to handle.

Here are some features to look for in a boat that will keep you safe on the open water, even in inclement weather. [links]

If you aren’t confident that you will be making open-ocean journeys, it is best to choose a boat that is made for sheltered waters. Here are some of the downsides of a seaworthy boat: more

Sailing across the ocean is a lot of fun, but most sailors would rather get there faster than dawdle. The open ocean can be a very dangerous place. Even if you have a seaworthy boat, you probably don’t want to be caught out in a storm. here

If you will be single-handing your boat or if you will be sailing with one other person, a boat of around 30 to 40 feet is a good balance.

Getting a bigger boat also means a lot more space, and that means more places to store all the fun stuff you want to bring, scuba gear, snorkels, surfing boards, and other fun stuff. Having a smaller boat might mean you won’t have space enough to fill up your dive tanks, so you miss out on many great opportunities.

Having wider hulls creates more drag and will hinder the boat from going as fast as a catamaran with narrow hulls (Check out catamaran hull speed explained). [links]

Lagoon is a leading catamaran manufacturer famous for its luxury products and state-of-the-art boats. However, if you're considering purchasing a cruising catamaran, you may get overwhelmed by the.

But having these hulls will greatly improve your comfort since it allows for wider berths(beds) and a boat that is easier to move around in, this might sound like a small thing and you might think that it’s not a big deal. But…

Most of the criteria I have shown here, you can easily evaluate yourself. If what others tell you doesn’t make sense, or if what I tell you doesn’t make sense, then make your own evaluation. There’s no magic here. Good design really does make sense and you can see the telltale signs.

Why would anyone design a boat this way? The answer is that today they probably wouldn’t. However some charter companies or marketing companies trying to take advantage of today’s catamaran popularity, and wanting to keep costs down choose older designs whose tooling cost is already amortized (or choose inexperienced designers) primarily to reduce the cost of the boat. The problem is that a bad design will always be a bad design and the cost will long be forgotten while the discomfort will linger…

By the way, the last thing you want to do is have decking and/or footwells forward. The extra weight forward is bad enough, but if the foot wells and lounges fill up with water when you surf down a wave at sea, for instance, you can have real problems. [links]

If the wind fails, you may find yourself stranded out in the ocean much longer than you had intended. Unless you are absolutely dedicated to traveling by sail alone, It is wise to equip your sailboat with a couple of motors. It’s true that extra motors will add weight, which is not what you want, but most sailors find that the added comfort in knowing that they can motor when they need to is well worth the extra weight. What’s more romantic than crossing the Atlantic in your own boat? If you have dreams of ocean crossings, you are doubtless wondering how big of a boat you need.

Make sure that you know how much your boat can hold safely before you load it up and head out on the water.

Whether you’re motoring or sailing, you need a boat at least 30 ft long to cross the Atlantic. Ideally, your boat will be at least 40 feet long for safety and comfort. The experience of motoring or sailing across the Atlantic are very different, but both require a boat of at least this size. If you intend to have a crew on the boat as well, you may need a boat that’s even bigger.

Hugo did not have enough wind to make the sail as quickly as he had intended. If he had not gotten supplies for a passing ship, he may not have made it. [links]
