See full version: When is the Best Time to Buy a Boat

Whether you’re after a new or used boat, says Canfield, “The time to buy the boat you want in 2018 is whenever you can get your hands on it.” The used-boat market is hot right now because the economy is doing well and there is a scarcity of boats for sale. The latter is due largely to the effects of the recession, which dramatically reduced new-boat manufacturing from 2008-2013. Those 6 or 8 year old boats you might like to buy now simply don’t exist in adequate numbers. As Cashman puts it, “If you see that 2012 370 Sundancer you’ve been looking for, buy it now. If you wait until tomorrow, it may well be sold.” here

Canfield points out that in year-round boating areas like San Diego, the best time to buy is often more a matter of when everything lines up—when business is good, your slip becomes available, and your spouse says yes. [links]

In seasonal boating areas where boats come out of the water as the snow flies, spring and early summer are typically high season for boat sales, but that’s not necessarily the best time to buy. A good case can be made for buying a new boat in the fall. Often, dealers will cover the cost of winter storage and when spring rolls around, your boat will have priority to be launched and you’ll enjoy the first good boating weekends of the season. On the used-boat market, the same terms will often be negotiable; a seller facing another year of yard costs will often discount their offering price to encourage you to make the deal ahead of the winter. This is not necessarily the case with unusual older boats such as trawlers or custom racing sailboats. And if you’re willing to fix up or repower an older boat, there may be plenty of low-priced boats out there at entry-level prices. But be forewarned that the time to buy an older or project boat depends on being patient enough to discover the right boat that isn’t too big a project for your time or your budget. At the same time, be sure to buy the boat soon enough that you can finish the project work and be on the water before the upcoming season—or the season after, depending on your time frame.

Received wisdom may say that the spring is the best time to sell a boat, but there are many compelling reasons for doing so in the autumn. Granted, in the spring there are likely to be more potential buyers in the market, but equally you will be competing against a larger number of sellers. However, in the autumn there are still lots of people on the water hoping to enjoy the last of the summery weekends, while those who don’t (yet) have a boat are liable to be feeling as though they are missing out in a big way. more

Is Autumn the best time to sell a boat? Could it also be the best time to buy?

Furthermore, owners who wait until spring before selling will also have had to look after the boat over the winter (see laying-up and winterisation), ensuring there’s no storm damage, and then clean and tidy her up in the spring, probably paying for a lift to re-antifoul and so on. In addition, they will have to pay for storage over the winter and may even need to enter into another 12-month mooring contract.

Boaters in seasonal areas of the country should avoid purchasing in the spring or early summer—instead, opt to buy in the fall, when dealers may throw in the bonus of paying for your winter storage. Ed Kukla photo.

Even if prices sometimes shade lower toward the end of the month, if you’re looking to buy a boat and you’re not exactly sure what you want, avoiding the last week of the month may be a good idea. Take advantage of a quieter period when you will receive more thought and attention at an otherwise busy boat dealership.

If you are a cash buyer (money coming from an investment, etc.), you may be giving up some revenue for the months that you are buying your boat in advance of when you were thinking of doing it. If your investments are netting you after tax return that exceed 20% or more, then your argument for waiting for spring could be a valid one. Perhaps you could be my financial advisor in your spare time also!

A common thought is by buying now, my costs go up (storage, interest on a loan, or lost interest on an investment). The only one that is likely true is the last one. What do I mean by that? If you are borrowing money to purchase a boat, the interest and principal are the same total amount whenever you buy. Therefore, by starting to pay earlier, you simply owe less later and recoup that money when you sell, trade, or eventually pay the boat off. It's "six of one, half a dozen of another". The storage part will likely be covered by your dealer/marina until spring if you ask.

My very wise wife amazes me all the time by pulling gifts out of the closet the day before someone's birthday, or clothes for the kids that are perfect for the season. I ask, "When did you get that?" Her answer is always the same: "I bought it when I saw the right thing for the right price."

All of this can mean smart savings for your new or used boat for the next season. How much? As much as 5-13% off what you would pay for the exact same boat next spring. Tack on any price increase that is likely to come from the manufacturer and you could see savings of 7.5 - 18%!

Economics is a science that runs on a few "laws" like supply and demand, scarcity, etc. The component that you lose on when you purchase during the commonly "peak" buying times is demand. When demand is at its highest, prices are higher. Conversely, they are lowest when demand is lowest. here

All this makes sense, because we rationalize it in our minds that it is logical. Why pay for something before we need it? Right? Have you ever thought of what this type of behaviour costs us? The negative outcomes can be: over-spending, poor choices , and/or extra stress . here
