Remove engine cover and all spark plugs. If corroded or seized, a few drops of Engine Release on the plug's threads will make frozen plugs easy to remove. (Let it soak in for 15 to 20 minutes) Twice a day, morning and evening, using your Engine Release injector bottle, wet each cylinder with ½ oz of Engine Release. Three or four days of this should do it, and then let the Engine Release soak in for a week.

If you have spark and the plug was dry, move on to "Fuel" here

Ok, so you have the spark plug out of the motor, if the business end of the spark plug is completely caked with black crud, do yourself a favor and get a new spark plug right away. With that said, if the plug looks wet, you are getting fuel. If it looks dry, well, don't panic yet. Either way, put the spark plug wire back on the plug and lay the business end of the plug on the head (just set the plug on the metal part of the engine near the hole you took it out of). What you are doing here is grounding the plug to the engine, as if it were installed in the engine, but you want to be able to see if the plug sparks when you turn the engine over. more

Again for the purpose of this 2 stroke engine troubleshooting article I am not going to go into any more detail, but I will be adding carburetor repair videos and ariticles on this brand new website very soon. Please check back often.

Yep, it's that simple. Now this is of course providing your engine isn't blown up with a hole in the piston or something. Typically if you can "feel" resistance in the form of compression as you kick or pull your engine over, and it's not making any horrible banging noises, it's just a matter of checking air, fuel and spark to find the culprit and get you running again.

So to check the spark we need to pull the rubber cap off the spark plug and remove the plug from the engine. I am not going to get into plug reading as that will be a seperate article in itself. For the purpose of 2 stroke engine troubleshooting, we are going to keep the plug inspection simple.

While it is common for coolant to exit the overflow tube when the bike has been tipped over or when it has overheated, it should not occur regularly. Coolant blowing out the overflow tube is another good indicator of a leaking head gasket. more

A leak down test pressurizes the engine’s combustion chamber and compares the amount of pressure going into the combustion chamber to the pressure that is retained. Pressurized air is administered via the spark plug hole and two pressure gauges are used to make the comparison. The piston is positioned at top dead center. Air exiting the combustion chamber can then be traced back to the piston rings or cylinder head seal. [links]

Dribbles of coolant exiting the engine around the coolant pump are indicative of a faulty water pump seal. If left unattended, the entire cooling system will eventually empty, causing overheating and an incredible amount of damage. more

These carburettors do not need priming. Turn the fuel off after use just in case the small valve under the carburettor, and concealed inside the fuel bowl, should fail to shut the fuel off and fuel will continue to flow out into the engine once it stops running. [links]

It is not actual petrol that is exploded by the spark but petrol vapour (gas) so if there is too much petrol in the cylinder head the liquid petrol will wet the spark plug and it will not explode. The engine is said to be flooded when this happens and the remedy is to wait until the surplus fuel evaporates. more

This is due to the moving parts freeing up, the piston sealing better against the cylinder walls and diaphragm carburettors seem to work better after some use. I assume the diaphragm becomes a little more flexible after some use and sometimes a gummy residue is left inside the carburettor by the petrol used to test run new engines – this needs to dissolve away as it may block or partially block the fuel inlet jet or restrict the butterfly valve. here

Most engines should start after about four pulls of the starter rope but many seem to have their own personality. For example, despite overhauls and new parts, my chainsaw takes six pulls before it fires just once on the seventh. (Since I started running it on higher octane petrol (95 as opposed to 91) the saw starts reliably after two or three pulls.) Then I put it on half choke and it will start on ninth pull. Never fails – well, hardly ever. Starting the chainsaw warms me up on cold mornings. [links]
