Japanese Freighter maybe theTaiei Maru? The true name of this wreck remains unknown to this day but it’s a freighter 137 meters long, lying on its starboard side. Location: N 11*59. 266′, E 120*02.199’This is a beautiful wreck site where you can observe all kinds of diverse sea life everything from groupers, sweetlips, scorpion fish, trumpet fish and occasionally turtles and sea snakes. Hard corals cover the port side, which is up to 16 meters below the surface. The big cargo and engine rooms allow easy penetration of this wreck for Wreck Certified divers. If you dive on a sunny day you get a chandelier like effect from the beams of sunlight entering and exiting the cargo holds. Two massive boilers in the center of the ship are big attractions on this dive. Behind the boilers you can see the damage resulting from one of the bomb strikes that disabled the ship. This dive is best using 34% to 38% Nitrox for a 75% increase in allowable bottom time. This ships maximum depth: 25 meters, average about 16 meters.Recommended certification level: Open Water Diver excluding penetration, Advanced Open Water Diver, Wreck Diver Specialty here

The Kogyo Maru is located at N 11*58. 782′ E 120*02. 413′. She was a Japanese freighter carrying construction materials and building supplies for the Japanese war effort in the Pacific. The Kogyo Maru was 6353 tons, 129 meters long, and 18 meters wide. She was powered by two steam turbines (517Nhp) geared to a single shaft. The Kogyo Maru is presently lying on her starboard side in 34 meters of water. It offers dive (swim throughs) into all six holds and through the engine room & bridge area. The Kogyo Maru’s second hold contains an incline of concrete bags which collapsed as the ship sank. A small bulldozer draws attention as you swim into the hold, complete but totally encrusted with coral, You can swim over the deck to the bridge and engine room below. Enter both from the stern for easier access. Swim through the spacious engine room and look around then exit out through the bridge. If you have enough air go below deck level to the stern and see all of the machines and equipment for moving cargo on the ship. You will see both hard and soft corals covering the side of the ship. This dive is best when made using 30% or 34% Nitrox for a 50% increase in allowable time. If you have enough gas mixture and a long enough No Decompression Limit you can cover the whole ship on one dive. The Kogyo Maru’s Maximum depth is 34 meters, average depth 24-26metersRecommended certification level: Advanced Open Water, Wreck Diver Specialty. here

While there are plenty of amazing individual shipwrecks in this region, like the SS Yongala or Bali’s Liberty Ship, this article is focusing on dive destinations where you can explore numerous shipwrecks during your stay. Following is a guide to the best wreck diving destinations in the Asia/Pacific region.

Countless ships have come to grief in the waters of the Asia/Pacific region, victims of war, storms, piracy or poor navigation. Found in this area are everything from ancient Chinese junks carrying priceless porcelain to Spanish galleons loaded with silver and gold to more modern cargo ships. But some of the famous shipwrecks in this area were sunk in the many fierce battles of World War II.

The largest wreck at Chuuk Lagoon is the impressive submarine tender Heian Maru. Resting on its port side in 33m, it takes many dives to see all the features on this 155m long ship, including a stack of periscopes. Other wonderful wrecks in Chuuk Lagoon include the Aikoku Maru, Nippo Maru, Hoki Maru, Fumitzaki, Yamagiri, Hanakawa Maru, Sankisan Maru and the list goes on and on. It would take months or even years to investigate every wreck in Chuuk Lagoon, so it is not surprising that divers return year after year to explore this wreck diving Mecca.

There are plenty of dive centres and operators in each of the main centres, some with their own ‘resort’ others servicing a number of resorts. Diveplanit can certainly recommend the Dugong Dive Center, Busuanga.

Palawan is the long thin arm of the Philippines that runs down below the South China Sea from Manila south-west to Sabah. From a diving perspective, there are three important parts: in the far north is Coron, the southern tip of Busuanga Island which is home to a famous fleet of Japanese wrecks; El Nido, and the surrounding islands, providing to easy and diverse diving, and Puerto Princesa, the departure port of the liveaboards heading for the Tubbataha Reef in the Sulu Sea.
