That shows that wealthy residents of the most populous nation and the one whose economy has been rising the fastest in the world are as drawn to the sea as those whose fabulously rich have been motoring and sailing about for years in their floating mansions.
Consider what it would take to buy and navigate a vessel like Illusion, a 275-foot Pride Yachts-made mega-craft now on the market for around $100 million. Certainly out of the reach of most on island. more
Government leaders hope a good portion of these vessels will be flying the Cayman flag as they cruise the seas. Such visibility could help enhance the islands’ image. Plus, all the fresh spending their owners and crews bring here will help enrich local suppliers of professional goods and services as well as government coffers through fees, levies and inspections costs.
Choosing an offshore yacht registration site, including Cayman, the Bahamas, Singapore, Cyprus, Panama, Hong Kong, and many more, can be an enormously complex process. In the U.S., savvy owners look for a board-certified maritime admiralty attorney who specializes in recreational boating. A well-decked-out firm also likely handles insurance choices, crewing issues, and financing matters. [links]
He noted that “yacht builders with pedigree or innovative designs seem to have fared best, but overall, the industry seems robust and healthy.”
The answer is that it’s not just ports such as Grand Cayman that win rewards for offshore yacht registration; the wealthy foreign owners of Cayman-registered craft find benefits beyond the imagination of most people of ordinary means. more
" '[The new yacht]' will make 'A' look like a dinghy," one yacht worker said.
According to yacht workers in Germany familiar with the project, the ship will be around 147 meters, or 482 feet. That would easily surpass the 96-meter "Sea Cloud"— built in the 1930s—and the 289-foot "Maltese Falcon," built by Silicon Valley venture-capitalist Tom Perkins and launched in 2006.
The boat has been shrouded in secrecy ever since work began in 2012. Yet new photos of the ship, called "Sailing Yacht A," have started to emerge on TheYachtPhoto.com and on SuperYachtTimes.com. more
The combined mass of the sails will be larger than a football field and the mast system, which appears to be made up of three masts, will be made of super lightweight, high-strength carbon fiber, these people said. It will have a crew of 66 people.
Melnichenko, a Russian billionaire who made his fortune from banking, steel and fertilizer, couldn't be reached for comment. here
"Sailing Yacht A" would be his second ground-breaking megayacht. Melnichenko also built the motor-yacht named "A"—a sleek, modernist 394-feet ship that has become one of the most photographed and popular in the world. Other pictures taken on the floor of the Sibuyan Sea by a team from the Octopus, Allen’s luxury yacht and undersea exploration vessel, showed one of the warship’s enormous anchors and a heavily encrusted valve captioned: “RIP crew of Musashi, approximately 1,023 lost.”
But mighty as she was, the Musashi was not invulnerable – especially to aerial attack. On October 18 1944, Japanese vice admiral Takeo Kurita sailed with a 67-strong fleet, including both the Musashi and Yamato, into the Sibuyan Sea, west of the Philippine island of Leyte, aiming to throw back an American landing and attack vulnerable US transport ships on the other side of the island. more
Despite numerous witness accounts of the sinking, the exact location of the Musashi’s wreck was never clearly established. Allen, who co-founded Microsoft with Bill Gates in 1975 and is ranked by Forbes magazine as the 51st richest person in the world, said he began searching for the battleship more than eight years ago.
