October 26, 2018 – CABO SAN LUCAS, B.C.S., Mexico – A 510-pound black marlin on the final day of the 2018 Bisbee’s Black & Blue Marlin Tournament propelled the California-based team, Chinito Bonito , to victory and a staggering payout of $3,004,900.00.
Angler Dennis Bartos and Team Survivor are not going home empty-handed. Their blue marlin, tipping the scales at 328 pounds, earned a check for $42,187 for third place. Rounding out the top five, Baja Banditos pocketed $11,250 for a 320-pound blue, while Tepeyacos took fifth with a 304-pounder, good for $7,500. [links]
As befitting the World’s Richest Fishing Tournament, the Bisbee’s Black & Blue, presented by IGY Marinas, did hand out a whopping $2 million dollars in cash prizes at the awards celebration Saturday night.
For the week, the 912 anglers from multiple countries caught sixty blue marlin and six black marlin.
Team Casa Hogar was the top winner this year. The 10 anglers and crew were fishing on behalf of the local non-profit organization that provides food, shelter, and education to under-privileged Los Cabos boys. Angler Omar Castaneda scored the win after landing the biggest qualifying fish of the tournament, a 385-pound blue marlin. That fish took the overall team prize, tournament jackpot, top captain award (Capt. Ernie Cossio), and the Day Two $500 Daily Jackpot. The team is donating the $258,325 winnings to Casa Hogar. here
But the real winners are a local orphanage for boys, as well as the citizens of Los Cabos.
Although they were sure that their catch was a qualifier weighing over 300 pounds, they weren’t sure by how much, and rather than continue fishing they raced to the weigh station, arriving just a few minutes after the opening at 3:00 p.m. here
Action continued to be at a slow pace and of course in addition to the incredibly bright full moon, some anglers observed that the cause might be the unsettled conditions. more
Later, Brian Walley, owner of the Reel Energy noted on Facebook: “Today started off well with a blue marlin hooked in the first 45 minutes but it fell off 10 feet from the leader. Although it wasn't a qualifier, so it was going to be released … very, very, rough sea conditions!! more
The winning fish was worth $645,425 to Briggs and the Team 4 Yahoo members in prize and jackpot money for DAY ONE. [links]
