In 2014, the Bisbee's Black & Blue Fishing Tournament faced a unique challenge. Hurricane Odile had passed through just weeks before, leaving the Cabo San Lucas area devastated in its wake. The hurricane and its resulting damage almost canceled the tournament. To save the tournament and stimulate the local economy, Bisbee's Fish and Wildlife Conservation Fund used its Cabo Relief Fund — an anonymous donor pledged to pay the entrance fee for any team that would charter a local boat through the relief fund. Bisbee's Black & Blue Fishing Tournament is considered one of the richest fishing tournaments in the sport, with a $5000 entrance fee. Without the prohibitive entrance fee, Team Casa Hogar was able to fish in the tournament. [links]

With some of the boys from Casa Hogar, Omar was able to reel in a 385-pound blue marlin to secure first place. The team won $258,325 — all of which was donated back to support Casa Hogar. No one on Team Casa Hogar had ever fished before, but in working together, the team was able to secure the win. Omar did indeed fight with the blue marlin for 43 minutes straight before he was able to reel it in, as was portrayed in Blue Miracle. In a 2014 press release, Bisbee’s Black & Blue shared that it was able to give away $2.1 million in prizes to its 125 teams that year, including Casa Hogar’s prize. The biggest winner of the tournament was Sporty Game, which won $1.68 million on a 335-pound marlin.

Because Blue Miracle is only loosely based on the true Casa Hogar story, there are some details that have been changed or left out — but, besides some Hollywood bling, the film does its best to stick to the true story. The story of Blue Miracle is already heartwarming, but discovering the truth behind the film makes the story even more moving — Casa Hogar is indeed a real orphanage based in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, and Team Casa Hogar truly won Bisbee's Black & Blue Fishing Tournament. Here is the true story behind the orphanage and the tournament, and everything the movie changed. here

Blue Miracle tells the heartwarming story of a group of orphans saving their home through a fishing tournament — but how much of the story was true?

Casa Hogar is an orphanage run by Omar Venegas and Rebeca Rangel in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Omar himself grew up on the streets of Mexico, and he was inspired to give back to his community in the form of Casa Hogar. The orphanage originally housed orphaned boys — roughly 40 of them around the time Team Casa Hogar participated in Bisbee's Black & Blue. Casa Hogar was damaged during Hurricane Odile in real life, as most of Cabo was. Casa Hogar provided shelter, food, and education to underprivileged boys in the Cabo area. 8 orphans from Casa Hogar were chosen to fish in the Bisbee Black & Blue; Juan Anaya, Eduardod Arnaut, Jonathan Bernal, Geovanny Cabanas, Ramon Carmona, Alan Galindo, Jose Galindo, and Moises Manriques. After the tournament money was donated to the orphanage, Casa Hogar was able to renovate, add amenities, and create a program for girls. The expansion project included new dormitories, recreational spaces, classrooms, medical offices, and more. While Casa Hogar did not financially benefit from the creation of Blue Miracle, their social media says they've received an influx of kind messages since the movie's premiere. Casa Hogar relies heavily on donations to continue to provide underprivileged children with everything they need. [links]

Blue Miracle is centered around Omar Venegas (played by Jimmy Gonzales) and Casa Hogar, the boys' orphanage Papa Omar runs with his wife. Casa Hogar is quickly running out of money — if Omar can't pay his debts, the property will be foreclosed and the children will be turned out to the streets once again. Wade Malloy (played by The Day After Tomorrow star Dennis Quaid) is a washed-up captain who is chasing the glory of another tournament win, as he currently holds the record for winning two years in a row during his glory days. Bisbee's Black & Blue Fishing Tournament is the solution both of them need — and when the two parties are paired up on one boat, it seems unlikely that Team Casa Hogar will win. In the end, Omar is able to reel in a first-place blue marlin and win enough money to save the orphanage while giving Wade the win he needed. With the money, the orphanage pays off the bank with enough left to renovate, and Captain Wade decides to turn over a new leaf and prioritize his family again. here

“We had only fished 14 days with the boat prior to last Friday,” Duffie said. “It’s been such an unbelievable start, especially seeing this being built first-hand by our incredible team. The whole family is involved in this, and I am so proud of everything. Fishing is really my family’s only hobby and it’s something we have done together forever. It’s such a joy to be able to share this with my family and friends.” [links]

While conducting our fact-check of the Netflix movie, we learned that like in the film, the operations director of the Casa Hogar orphanage, Omar Venegas, caught the 385-pound blue marlin. [links]

While researching the question, "How accurate is Blue Miracle?" we learned that the team was able to subdue the large fish after a 43-minute battle. "We were at Destiladeras in the Sea of Cortez using live bait and caught nothing. The water temperature was 83 degrees. We switched and put a Hi-5 Petrolero Lure on and three minutes after it was in the water we got our bite," said Capt. Ernie Cossio, skipper of the team's vessel, the Mucho Bueno. [links]

Just weeks after Hurricane Odile tore through the tournament's host city of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, 125 teams (some sources state 127) competed in the five-day marlin fishing tournament, which was held with the help of Dallas-based Bisbee's Fish & Wildlife Conservation Fund as well as various sponsors. In the end, $2.14 million in prize money was awarded to the winners of the competition. -Mexico News Daily here
