The carb was rebuilt mid last summer so we used it the entire senond half of the season. what i mean by plenty of fuel is when i open the butterfly and look in while an assistant (wife or me) moves the throttle forward to the start position or pumps the throttle once or twice to prime the engine when cold, i can see fuel entering the carb through the jets into the venturie. She won't fire at any throttle setting? Just off idle for instance? If the idle air control stepper has died, no air for idle. What is your rail pressure after key on? Should be 40+ psi.

Secondly, and most importantly for long term health of your VP 8.1 engine. Minimize extended idling. Follow every low RPM sequence with the "shut down" procedure. IE, when tying up the doc, slip or before loading onto a trailer, advance RPMs to 2000 for 2 minutes. The last thing the engine should experience at key off every day is the shut down procedure. All Vortec 8100 derivatives benefit by this, but it's especially important to Volvo Penta versions of this engine. more

Engine overheat on the 8.1 typically does not shut down the engine. At 194 F, the engine goes into protection mode by shutting off one bank of injectors above 2700 RPM. The effect is dramatic and the boat will not maintain cruise or plane. A total shut down and no-start is a symptom of a different problem. The fuse box contains a pair of relays, one for fuel pumps, and one for the ignition system. They are typically marked which is which. If you become stranded again, before calling for a tow, I would be tempted to pull one of these two out of it's socket, one at a time. Feel for temp. Eyeball the receptacle for corrosion, put it back in. Try to start. If no - go, do the same for the other relay. If still no go, get the tow, and have a certified Volvo mechanic take a look a the crank sensor at the back of the engine. more
