While there's no one-size-fits-all answer as to how you can combat the effects of wind and current, the most important thing for you to recognize is that they exist in the first place. Before you even begin your approach to the dock, eyeball a flag or banner to see how hard it's flapping and in which direction. To get an indication of current, look for loose lines hanging in the water, water movement against pilings, or small bits of flotsam, like leaves and sticks, to determine which way and how fast the water is moving.

3. Approach the slip from one side, allowing plenty of room between your boat and other boats or obstructions, and position the boat so its pivot point — about two-thirds of the way forward of the transom when the boat is moving forward — is along the centerline of the slip.

They did say when I picked the boat up they adjusted the cables so maybe that's what it is. This weekend I will try and disconnect the cable and manually put it in reverse. If it helps any when put into reverse it never fully engages and sounds horrid. Usually the tach says about 700 rpm in idle. When it goes into reverse is it kind of a engaged or disengaged thing no I between?

1000, Shift linkage out of adjustment would be my first guess. Like Shad Burke said, disconnect the shift cable and engage linkage into reverse by hand, should "clunk" into gear.

3. Approaching the slip at a 90-degree angle, once the middle of the boat is even with the middle of the slip, stop and center your steering wheel. From here on out it's easiest to turn the boat by opposing the engines (shifting one into forward and the other into reverse), and although tempting, it's best not to touch the steering wheel, using only the engines for maneuvering. more

2. Trim your engines up slightly (using the tilt-trim switch at the throttle), so the propwash goes under the boat where it has the greatest effect. If you don't do this, the propwash may merely hit the transom making the boat harder to maneuver.

4. Now oppose the engines to get the boat spinning. Remember that the bow will move in the direction of the throttle you shift into reverse. So if you shift the starboard throttle into forward and the port throttle into reverse, the bow will spin to port. more
