DANIA BEACH — A fire that consumed two catamarans sent two men who were working on them to the hospital Wednesday, Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue said.
Fire rescue crews were called to the canal shortly after 2 p.m. and found both catamarans fully engulfed in smoke and flames, Broward Fire Rescue Chief Michael Kane said.
One boat caught fire first, and the blaze spread to the second. The flames burned through one boat’s mooring line, causing it to float away before it was secured by a fire rescue boat, Kane said. [links]
A man was hospitalized in critical condition after two boats caught on fire and were destroyed in Fort Lauderdale Wednesday morning, officials said.
The victim, who was burned, was taken to Broward Health Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, Little said. He was later airlifted to Ryder Trauma Center, where he is in critical but stable condition, a hospital spokeswoman said.
The three visitors from New Jersey ran off the boat as the fire quickly spread to a 38-foot sailboat, fully engulfing it in flames, Little said. Two people escaped from the sailboat before it caught fire. more
They were not injured in the incident, Gollan said. WSVN-Ch. 7 reported that it was two men who were on the boat and said they were later spotted on dry land speaking with officials. One of them was wrapped in a blanket, WSVN reported.
FORT LAUDERDALE — Two people had to abandon ship several miles off the coast near Port Everglades on Thursday when their boat caught fire and eventually sank.
Nearby tow boats pulled them from the water to safety, and the U.S. Coast Guard came and picked them up, said Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Stephen Gollan.
