Outboard motors are more accessible and require less maintenance than inboards. They don’t need to be winterized, and you don’t have to raise the boat to access the engine. Generally, outboard motors are easier and cheaper to maintain. [links]
If we’ve convinced you to outfit your boat with an outboard, there’s another choice to make: Two-stroke or four-stroke. Here are some things to consider: more
Outboards are typically faster to plane, deliver better 0-to-30 MPH acceleration, and offer a greater top speed.
Most boats with outboard engines provide more space than boats with inboard engines. Inboard boats have come a long way in the past few years as designers (especially Crownline’s) have begun to accommodate the sterndrive to provide passengers with more space to move around and get comfortable. But, generally speaking, outboard boats have more room and are typically better suited for entertaining and larger groups.
Fuel additives used to get a bad rap, sort of along the lines of a modern day snake oil. [links]
When you’re looking at fuel, it’s not just about the iso-octane you’re pumping into your engines – it’s n-heptane. The components of your fuel are the basis for the detonation/burn ratio and ability of your engine to handle the combustion – and its effects. The higher the octane rating, the higher percentage iso-octane in the fuel, which means a smoother burn. It’s important to note that while the higher octane will not give you more standard performance than your engine is designed to give, the lower octane will reduce the expected peak performance of your engine. Bottom line: by going cheap you’re robbing your boat and yourself. more
Ask a hundred mechanics and get a hundred different answers. Regardless, the bottom line is the same; ethanol is here to stay. But just like your pre-late model small engines have some difficulty running well with ethanol, so will your boat. No worries, mate – the boat and engine manufacturers know Ethanol is here to stay, and are making tweaks to their engine building, as well as recommending fuel stabilizers without having a fit about the warranty. It’s obviously best to avoid the ethanol altogether whenever you possibly can but since that’s not always an option, make sure to talk to your mechanic about the best stabilizer to run for the season you’re in. here

For the record, a boat trailer usually costs between $2,000 and $5,000, so if you’re vacillating between keeping your boat in the water at a marina or harbor or hauling it back and forth from your home, the trailer is the cheaper way to go by far. But it’s not the easier way, of course. here
Let’s assume you bought a used motorboat in decent condition and spent $100,000. And let’s assume your marina charges a mid-range $5,000 per year. And that you keep the speed down but head out at least once a week, so that’s around $12,000 a year for fuel. And let’s say $1,500 a year for insurance, and a mere $1000 for winter maintenance and storage.
You can buy an inflatable dinghy for about $35, with tax, paddles included, and then (sort of) call yourself a boat owner.
The expense with boat winterizing comes in the form of storage fees, shrink wrapping, draining and/or changing of oil, fuel and other fluids, and other general maintenance required before and after a long period the boat will spend out of the water. here
Buying a boat is a major investment, so take the time to fully understand how much boat ownership really costs, and that means purchase price, annual boat costs and calculating the likely lifetime investment your vessel will require.

If you're looking for a personal cruiser with superb seamanship, comfort, and fuel efficiency, a tug boat may be exactly what you're looking for. As a cross between a trawler yacht and a downeast boat, tug boats generally share many of the same characteristics. Whether you are crossing the gulf stream over to the Bahamas or cruising up the coast of the Pacific Northwest, many of the mainstream tug boat brands offer exceptional performance at slower, more efficient speeds.
