Ok so my Craftsman lawn mower was working fine until this morning. It is a 2002 mower with a 6 ½ HP Briggs & Stratton Model123K02-02260E1 engine. I used my spark tester hooked up to the spark plug and there was no spark. So then I hooked the tester directly to the block and there was spark. I changed plugs but still the same results. So I’m thinking it must be a really weak spark. I cleaned the magneto and reset the flywheel gap to one business card thick. Still the same results.
Then I looked at the kill switch and everything looked OK. I unhooked the kill switch wire and put my VOM between the wire and the block and there was 0 ohms resistance which says to me that the kill switch wire is shorted to ground. I checked the condition of the wire back to the magneto and it is good. more
As far as I can figure, that wire from the magneto should not be shorted to ground until the kill switch closes for safety. That being the case I figure it must be internally shorted in the magneto and I need to replace the magneto. here
To replace a lawnmower kill switch remove the spark plug. Do this before every single repair. Next, ask someone to operate the safety lever to move the brake and swing arm out of the way from the kill switch. here
The same happens in reverse when you let go of the safety lever or dead mans handle the switch connects and cuts off the spark. This is how you stop the lawnmower engine running. Without a kill switch, the engine would keep running until it runs out of fuel! So if you have a lawnmower that starts and runs but won’t stop then check the kill switch!
The swing arm is operated by a cable attached to the operator handle. Operate the cable using the lever and make sure the arm swings out of the way and there is a clear gap where the kill switch and swing arm disconnect. If the swing arm does not operate and move away from the kill switch then the lawnmower will not run. more

remove the kill switch cover and disconnect the ignition coil wire. Usually, you can unhook the killswitch from its’s housing near the lawnmower brake with a flathead screwdriver. You can replace the switch by pushing a new one in its place and re-connecting the ignition coil wire. On other types of lawnmower, you will find a micro switch instead of a kill switch. To Replace a microswitch kill switch you need to disconnect the ignition wires and undo the microswitch. Re-connect a new microswitch and make sure it clicks when you operate the safety lever.
