    1. The component parts of our new ladder before we began to assemble.
    2. Notches in the treads and the hollows in the sides of the triangles are clearly visible

Next, one of the wooden triangles, which had hollows cut into the two long sides, was placed with its short side against the bottom of the tread. The tails of the rope were led around this, and another seizing applied just beneath the tip of the triangle. here

This year we have designed and constructed another ladder, loosely based on the ones used by the pilots when I worked in the North Sea, which rolls into a reasonably compact bundle while providing a safe and easy way to climb aboard.

The position of this seizing was carefully adjusted until the thread and the triangle were held firmly together. This process was then repeated using the other rope at the other end of the tread. As long as the seizings are tight and correctly positioned, the two pieces of timber will be held securely together, without the need of glue or any other fastening. here

To assemble the ladder, we first found the centre of each of the 8ft (2.4m) lengths of rope that would form the sides and applied a flat seizing, so creating an eye with two 4ft (1.2m) tails. Taking one of the ropes, the two tails were then laid side by side, and seized together again after another 4in (10cm). The tails then separated to pass around the wooden tread, fitting into notches that were cut 3/4in (18mm) from the end. here

The sides of our new ladder are made from three-strand rope while the treads are wooden, supported by small wooden isosceles triangles under each end.

I'm putting off surgery for as long as I can (hopefully end of boating season), kids are already upset that they've missed a couple of weekends of boating because I can't walk for S@#*. Well, I'm feeling better, good enough to go boating, but there's no way I'll be able to go hours on a boat and not 'go' in the water (if you get my drift ).

First off, I'm 6'6", and the ladder we have on our Four Winns is 'adequate' in as much as the only way I can get in the boat is to put both knees on the bottom rung and pull myself up enough to be able to step up.

Both meniscus (inner and outer?) on both knees, complete tear.

Any ideas for a 'temporary' extension for a ladder? I was thinking a rope ladder hooked to the bottom rung, but does anyone have any other ideas?
