Aaron has been working in the Marine Industry for over a decade and holds certifications for Yamaha and Mercury Marine. It is not uncommon for him to own and be working on at least three different boats at any given point in time!

The thermostat isn’t really a serviceable item. Outside of cleaning a LITTLE corrosion off of it and picking a couple of pieces of grass out of it. here

You got the boat packed with your gear and your best friends. When you go to start the engine, it simply clicks. Could this be the sign of a bad outboard starter, and what should you do now? As to.

Hopefully, this has been valuable and informational for you about why it is important to keep up with the thermostat maintenance in your outboard! [links]

If you find a good alternative and it works properly, awesome! No worries! Sometimes though it is best to just get the correct thermostat from the manufacturer and not go through the trouble of checking all the differences between the two. But that is entirely up to you. [links]

Absolutely! It is ok to run the engine without the thermostat for a little while. Things happen. Troubleshooting, stuck closed thermostat, overheating, the list goes on. So in a pinch, remove the thermostat and get going! more

92Evenrude200HP,I have a pair of 1989 225 rude's that I run without the thermustat guts, therefore creating an even flow with a slight restriction. The temp never goes over 160.

I don't run with a thermostat at all, and i live in maine, but i only have a little 18 horse. In fact, the mechanic took it out for me. Truly, i don't see how it could hurt running without one. Im sure someone will chime in and prove me wrong..

Were the new thermostats the black ones and did you replace the cover gaskets with new ones? There are small holes in the cover gaskets that need to be open.

The looper likes to run warm. Run cold, it gets excessive carbon and fouls plugs.

I've been told that running a two stroke cold changes the shape and relationship between the piston and the cylinder and accelerates wear.

I think your alarms would have gone off if you really hit 190 degrees - might want to check that with something a lttle more reliable than your dash gauge.

Best to keep them there mate same with a car, you don't want to be running @ 5000 rpm on a cold motor.

So even though I had blocked galleries overheating that side, taking the thermostat out made it run way too cool. At least cars recirculate the same water that will heat up a bit eventually. The outboard recieves cold water all the time and I think that it would wear out quick at those temperatures. [links]

When I had an overheat problem with my Yamaha 115 2 stroke I took the thermostat out of one side (V4) for a short run to problem solve. With the cowling off and using a heat gun the head never got much past the water temp (22-23 deg) The other side with the the thermostat in ran at the required temp (50-55 deg).
