7. General Inspection. An inspection of such items as hoses, belts, cables, wires, fittings, fuel system components, bilge pumps, lights, safety gear and everything else should be performed BEFORE using the boat. [links]

Start the engine on the hose before going to the ramp and check the shifting and all your gauges for proper opertation. Watch your engines temperature, voltage and oil pressure while running on the hose. Look for water, oil and fuel leaks. Make sure your prop is properly installed and in good condition. Operate the trim and look for any trim hose oil leaks. Double check all the fuel lines and look for any evidence of fuel leaks or flooding.

If you've ever had an old car sitting around for a while you know that getting it started and back in running condition isn't always easy. Engines were made to run and to be run regularly. The longer they sit idle the more they can develop problems you'll have to deal with later.

Although it may take only a few minutes to actually slip the belt on, getting to the belt might not be all that easy. It's likely you'll have to take off multiple hoses, move electrical wiring and remove other engine components to gain access to it. Once you're able to access the belt you'll have to make sure to align the crankshaft and camshaft markings and ensure the number one piston is at top dead center (TDC). If you don't get this exactly right you can throw the entire engine off its timing and probably cause some serious internal damage when all of those metal parts start crashing into each other.

Do you have a car that has been sitting in the garage or somewhere on your property? Are you considering buying a car that hasn’t moved in years? First things first! Do not attempt to start a car that has been sitting that long, as it could cause a lot of damage. Before starting a car that has been dormant for a long time, there are a few important things you have to do.

After you’ve done all that, make sure you check under the hood, and carefully inspect all the wiring. Rodents often make their home in abandoned cars and chew through the wiring, which can be made worse when you turn the key in the ignition. You should also check for dirt and debris around the radiator, as too much grit can affect the lubrication of the system.

Gas is only good for about 3 months, so always add new gas if the tank is in good shape. Once you have worked through these steps and replaced everything of concern, it is time to put that key in the ignition!

Even after a few months, most modern cars can still be safely started – providing the battery still holds a charge. However, there are a few simple checks you should make first. This will help you quickly identify problems while making sure your car is safe to start.

To check your vehicle’s brake fluid level, you need to identify the brake master cylinder reservoir. It is typically mounted at the rear of the engine, in line with the position of the brake pedal. Your owner’s manual should be able to show you exactly where it’s located. more

A visual check of the tires should be performed to make sure they are in good condition, before attempting to drive the vehicle. Air pressure should be checked and adjusted to the manufacturer’s recommended psi. This can be found on a sticker that is usually located on the driver’s door jamb. You could also find the recommended psi for your tires in your owner’s manual. here
