For older, cured latex paint surfaces, either use a fine sanding sponge to lightly sand it down, or use a "liquid sander" (see Resources). Make sure the painted surface is perfectly clean and free of dust before varnishing.

Varnishing over faux paint evens the shine and protects the finish.

Water-based acrylic varnish also can be used over any type of latex paint. It is thinner than either oil or polyurethane, and may take an extra coat to achieve full hardness and shine. However, it is easy to apply and dries quickly. Beware: Acrylic varnishes can scare you at first. They go on milky-white, but rest assured they dry to a crystal-clear finish.

If you've used a high-quality, durable latex or acrylic paint, varnishing over it won't necessarily make it more durable. But if the paint used was lower quality, or if you simply want to increase the gloss, varnishing is the answer.

The latex glazes and paints used for faux painting are quite washable, but varnishing offers an extra layer of protection. So, faux finishes often are varnished over, especially if the surface is going to take some use and abuse. The varnish also can serve to even out the gloss and intensify the colors.

Some faux finishes call for a varnish to protect the surface, and varnishing over dull paint can brighten it and add shine. Varnish can be used over latex paint if you use the right kind; however, using the wrong varnish can change the color of the paint. As a result, there are some techniques you should be aware of before starting a varnishing project.

Subsequently, question is, what clear coat can you put over latex paint? Polyurethane can be oil- or water-based, and you can use either kind over latex paint; however, oil-based polyurethane tends to yellow as it ages, whereas water-based varieties stay transparent.

An oil-based varnish can be applied over completely dry acrylic paint with little difficulty. The polyurethane type of varnish is usually the best choice for this. However, oil-based varnishes typically have a natural amber tint and often become more yellow over time.

A fresh coat of paint can give almost any wooden piece, such as furniture, cabinets or room trim, a much needed face-lift. Go a step further and apply a clear polyurethane over the painted surface to help protect the paint, as well as the underlying wood. [links]

Repairing and caulking the wood helps your home look better and last longer. The TSP helps get rid of anything that would sit between the paint and wood. This helps the paint bond more tightly and lasts longer. here

You can paint over varnished wood as long as you use the right materials and painting process. The best paint to use is a water-based acrylic one. If you’re using an oil-based paint only use an oil-based primer, not an acrylic one.

Jason looks up at Melissa in surprise. “Well, that was sudden. I’m glad you finally agree though.” Melissa nods firmly. “Yep. It looks old and outdated, kind of like your mother’s house. No offense to her, it is a style, just not one I want for our home anymore.”

Wood rot and damaged wood, in general, may slow down the process. Painting over this just lets the damage get worse, which isn’t good for your home or furniture. [links]

Anyways, I got 3/4" ACX for the floors. I was planning on going with the old timers formula and then a few coats of spar varnish. Question is, can I paint over the oil based spar with an oil based paint? I dont want carpet, nor do I want the look of natural wood. I also dont want to sink the money in for epoxy resin, although I know that would be a great option. Thanks for any advice!! here

Hey fellas, I doing floors/transom on an old tinny. I actually bit the bullet and got marine grade ply for the transom (transom is 1 3/4" and I found marine ply in 7/8"). Figured It would save time and produce a transom that I wont need to fool with for some years. more
