Petrol and LPG Gas powered cars run on what are essentially controlled explosions of energy, controlled in part by the spark plugs. The spark plugs channel the electrical current from the ignition, igniting the fuel. It's an essential part of any working combustion engine and all modern cars. Like anything, they wear out, and are a relatively easy-to-fix issue on your car that you can learn to diagnose and correct with the right tools and the right know-how. See Step 1 for more information. more

Here’s how it went for me. One morning, truck wouldn’t start, just kept turning over. It was 5 degrees out. I replaced one plug only. Truck started right up. Another issue I had was bucking on the highway. That still remained. When the weather warmed up I tackled the other plugs and wires as well. Got all but one. It was frozen. The truck ran great for about 20 minutes. Then worse than ever before. I sprayed the frozen plug with PB blaster the day before. That morning, got a good bite on it, turned counter clockwise, then clockwise a few times and went for it. It broke free. Swapped it out with the last motorcraft spark plug. Didn’t check gap. Swapped out the coil pack. Truck is running great with 200,000 miles on it. Not sure if it ran worse because I had one inferior plug and wire that wouldn’t jive with the rest or if it needed the coil pack as well. Also. Cut the hard to fish wires at the coil pack and duct tape it to the new one. It’ll save you 20 minutes as opposed to fishing it thru by hand. Good luck. Hope this helps [links]

Spark plug wires are referred to by different names. Some people know them as high tension cables or high tension leads, while others know them as spark plug cables. These sets of wires are engineered to connect an ignition coil, magneto or distributor to each other of the spark plugs in an internal combustion engine. They help suppress the radio frequency interference as well as increasing torque and horsepower. However, it is important to go for the best spark plug wire set and not just any brand. This is because premium quality spark plug wire sets are durable and resistant to corrosion.

If you check your owner’s manual, you’ll probably find that your automaker recommends you replace your spark plugs roughly every 30,000 miles. That’s fine if you’re using stock spark plugs. However, the actual timing of replacement will vary depending on other factors. more

High Revs: If you regularly “put your car through its paces,” you’ll put additional wear and tear on your spark plugs, meaning that you’ll need to replace them more often. Drivers with a lighter foot will enjoy longer life from their plugs. [links]

Oil Leaks: When you pull a spark plug out of the engine, the base should be relatively clean. If there is oil present, it means there’s a leak. Not only does that mean you’ll need to replace a blown seal, but it means your spark plugs will need to be changed more frequently because of contamination. [links]
