In other words, it is a measure of the quantity of stress a line can handle before snapping.

If you are new to outdoor sports, you may not have all the gear you’ll need to enjoy the summer months ahead. One pastime that has been a popular way of spending summer evenings since the days of Adam is fishing. Even if you’ve not an experienced outdoorsman, odds are you’ve likely tossed out a line. Fishing can be a relaxing way to spend and evening, and can be done on a relatively low budget as well. Burgeoning sportsmen and women have a few gear considerations to make when putting their fishing rig together. One component of your gear you can’t afford to overlook is your fishing line, and choosing fishing line weight.

The pros rightly emphasize the importance of having the correct fishing line. It is the only link you have between you and your fish. Make the incorrect choice and you may wind up with a lot fewer fish on the stringer. If you are just beginning to assemble your fishing tackle, and need a few tips for correctly choosing your fishing line weight, here are 4 things to keep in mind. here

Another thing you may need to consider when choosing fishing line weight is the environment you’ll be fishing in. If you’ve ever thrown out a line, there is a good chance you’ve gotten snagged. Certain fish, like bass, prefer to live in place of thick cover of weeds. If you target them you’ll likely spend more time snagged in the weeds and other gunk they hang out it. Therefore, you'll likely want to choose a line able to withstand a bit more tension. Constantly breaking your line off in weeds or tree limbs is not only frustrating, but can begin to get expensive when you frequently lose lures. Heavier line gives you a better chance to winch the lure back to you.

Play the fish. Let you drag and rod wear out the fish. Take your time bring in the fish. Don’t try to net the fish until the fish is ready.

Use a premium reel with a very smooth drag. Using 4 lbs line, you would most likely be using spinning outfit. Be sure to set the drag correctly at about 2 1/2 lbs. Let the drag wear down the fish if it runs. here

Don’t do a superman hook set if you get a bite. If you do, you’ll snap the line.

Use a 6 1/2 - 7′ medium action, extra fast tip rod. Rod should be strong enough to control the fish and help wear down the fish. Too soft a rod, you can’t control the fish, too stiff a rod and you might snap your line. here

Yes like Ron said, pound test does not mean a 10lb test can pull in fish that are 10 lbs, #test simply means the line at its weakest point should be able to withstand 10 lbs of pressure on the line at its weakest point ( this does not include cuts or knicks in your lines that you get from abrasions off rocks and such while fishing. Always use your drag have it set anywhere from 15% to 30% of your lines max # setting or the rods max # rating whichever is lower, drag too loose and a fish is running with a free spool pretty much to tight and line may snap..depends on what you're fishing for as to setting the drag properly, I believe anywhere from 1-3lbs of drag is good for most bass fishing. Side note also after every trip loosen your drag all the way off this will help prolong the life of your reels drag system and maybe even your reel in general.

What does a line's "max setting" refer to exactly? If my line is 10 lb test, is that the "setting" you're referring to? If so, how do you know, using that scale, when your drag is set to that 15 or 30 percent of that? I've never used a fishing scale, as you may have guessed. I'm a brand new fisherman. more
