Poulan 2-cycle air-cooled engine oil can be found in 3.2-ounce bottles. Mix one bottle with 1 gallon of fresh gasoline. [links]
Without proper care, even the best Poulan chain saw can malfunction. During refueling, it is paramount to maintain the oil ratio for which its engine was designed. Poulan suggests a ratio of 40 parts fuel to 1 part oil. [links]
Poulan engines are designed to run best on 87-octane regular unleaded gasoline -- avoid using diesel fuel and E85. Gasoline can be blended with 10 percent alcohol at the most, but do not store the saw with an alcohol-blended gasoline. here
To avoid oil separating from gasoline, shake up the mixture before refilling.
Left alone, the oil and gas will naturally separate from one another. To avoid potential harm to the chainsaw, grab a clean fuel container and mix the oil and gas into it before refueling. Be sure to mix well. Poulan estimates an average 30 days before the oil and gas fully separate again. To avoid harming the engine, don't mix more than a month's supply of fuel at a time. [links]
Not only are Poulan machines made to work with a specific ratio, but also with specific gas. For optimal performance, Poulan specifies regular unleaded gas with at least 87 octane. If necessary, you can use gas that has been blended with up to 10% alcohol additives. Unless your Poulan product user manual instructs otherwise, don't use diesel in a Poulan chainsaw. [links]
Poulan encourages customers to use its own brand of 2-cycle oil for air-cooled engines, most commonly found in 3.2 ounce size. Poulan brand oil is was designed specifically for its chainsaws and thus it is the only oil the brand guarantees. If Poulan brand oil is not available, opt for a high-quality oil that is labeled for air-cooled 2-cycle engines. Be sure to look closely at labels for the correct type -- don't use oil intended for other machines or water-cooled engines. here
Poulan designed their chainsaws to function best with specific oil. Though other oils of the same variety can be used, following ideal fueling specifications will help ensure your chainsaw works at its most optimal. Beyond specific oil type and brand, a specific ratio of oil and gas is necessary when fueling the engine.
Rather than having two separate tanks for gas and oil, Poulan chainsaws have one tank that requires a gas-oil blend. Chainsaws by Poulan work best running on a gas-oil ratio of 40 parts gas to 1 part oil. Mix with care -- a chainsaw is fueled with too much gas in the mixture, it can overheat or malfunction. Similarly, a chainsaw with too much oil in the fuel mixture can act sluggish.
Poulan chainsaws are also equipped with bar oil reservoirs. If you need to fill the bar oil, use only Bar & Chain oil, not the 2-cycle oil used in the engine.
The quality of the oil determines the ratio. Run Stihl Ultra synthetic at 50:1 with 93 octane gas. Even in old equipment that says 30:1 or 25:1. here
Or, more to the point, can I tell my neighbor to just use whatever generic 2-stroke and chain oils they have at the hardware store? I believe the 2-stroke oil they sell there is also a 50:1. There's no Poulan brand anything around here.
I've got a neighbor's Poulan chainsaw here, and the manual says to use the Poulan brand 40:1 in the gas and Poulan chain oil or "a good SAE 30." My own saw is a Stihl, so I have the Stihl 50:1 and Stihl brand chain lube. Is there any reason whatsoever to NOT use these in the Poulan?
All bar oil is sae30, but if its labeled as bar oil it has an additive that is supposed to make it tacky and make it stick to the chain. Any sae oil will work, even motor oil.

The trick here is to use quality oil - either dino or syn. If saws sit, use a blend. Some dino will keep surfaces wet and the synthetics will resist heat baking.
<Yes the 346XP or 550XP are part of the plan eventually but until then )>
Run 40:1 in both is a pretty good answer,
sounds like I can run 50:1 but will have to switch to the synthetic Husqvarna oil and not the regular. Was what my dealer recommended for my 365 anyways when I bought it. [links]

Okay so call me lazy but I don't want to have to haul two fuel cans around and most of my cutting will be done with my 365XT but will be using the Poulan for limbing and smaller stuff. Don't want the 40:1 mix to go to waste either. Looking to not have to add to the stuff I have to haul to the woods either.
