When you check your oil, if it is dirty or smells of gasoline, it’s time for your oil to be changed. You should also check the levels using the oil dipstick – if you’re oil is clean but only reaches the “Add” part of the dipstick, you’ll need to add more oil. When oil is changed, the filter is removed and less than 2 oz. of residual oil will remain in oil lines and throughout the motor. When it’s added and the new filter is not primed (meaning not filled at least half-way) it will take some time for the oil to fill in the filter and throughout the motor.
Additionally, how much oil should be on the dipstick? There will be two marks on the dipstick to show the optimum level that your oil should be at. Your oil level should be somewhere between the two. If your oil level is below the bottom line, or if there isn't any oil on the dipstick at all, you should immediately top up your engine oil. more

If you were pouring oil down the dipstick tube though, it could have been reading falsely high (The stick gets covered in oil in the tube as you push it down into the pan to read it). [links]
why don't you use the dipstick to check the oil level? here
It runs straight into the oil pan. The dipstick measures the amount of oil in the pan. The oil you added should have gone through the engine. The only reason the oil fill cap is because it is easier to pour oil into a 2" hole than a .25" hole.

If it's low oil pressure the motor has to be torn down until a mechanic finds the cause and fixes it, otherwise the engine will simply grind itself into metal shavings from lack of lubrication (It may have already done this. Is it making any new ticking or clacking noises?)
