What is the lifespan of an outboard motor?
You can run an outboard for a very short time out of water, but the impeller is running dry and will shred very rapidly.
Also, should I leave my outboard motor up or down? Simply put, if you are leaving the boat in the water, leave it in the up position to avoid growth. If you are leaving it out of the water, trim it down to drain the water and protect the Power Tilt and Trim seals from the sun.
Besides, what happens if you run an outboard out of water?
Running any outboard motor, when it is not submerged in water or without the motor flushing device installed on the intakes with water running through it, can very quickly over heat the engine.
On average, an outboard motor will run about 1,500 hours or 7 to 8 years. Each outboard motor will be different but if you keep up maintenance and take care of the motor it can last much longer. more
the water wont get sucked up. youll have to rely on water pressure from the hose to force it up into the motor. and i dont see that happening unless you neck the dia of the hose down to match the pick up tube. [links]
and if you did get any water up into the block it would just help.. more
Re: running motor without lower unit attached here
it is just said to be bad to run the water impeller with out water ..
Thanks Guys, I didn't know if the drive shaft should be in the crankshaft when it was running. So I'll give it a try & see if the knock quits.
I thought, with the lower unit off, there would be nothing turning the oil pump.
Are there Yamaha 4-strokes where the main driveshaft does NOT turn the oil pump?
I don't see the motor over heating if being run without water for less than a minute. Certainly the water pump won't be damaged since the lower unit will have been removed. But then there is the issue of condensation being formed with the temperature of the oil never rising to the point that it can evaporate the moisture. [links]
Yes. All portable outboards are designed for saltwater and freshwater use. These outboards are used by commercial fisherman worldwide and are prized for their long-term durability over years of demanding saltwater use. For maximum durability and corrosion protection, all outboards feature: High Grade Marine Alloy Construction, Stainless Steel Water Pump Housings, Zinc Coated Internal Water Passages, Sacrificial Zinc Anodes, and Exclusive Multi-Layer Protective Coating.
Who needs this option?
Anyone who has a 12V battery in their boat (for lighting or other accessories) and would like an alternative or supplemental charging method. here
NO! Four-stroke outboards are not filled with oil from the factory. You must add oil to the crankcase prior to use.
Yes. We have factory conversion kits available for 4hp engines and above. To convert a tiller model to remote, you will need an S.R.C. kit (the hardware required to create linkage under the cowl) and a control box for throttle and shift (with or without key switch). In addition, if you wish to have remote steering you may require a steering link arm or hook plate. We recommend professional installation by a qualified marine professional.
If you need help locating a service center in your area, please email us and include your zip code. Authorized ervice centers can also provide service after the warranty period.
NOTE: The 12V Alternator/Charging System is an option only and is NOT required to operate the outboard. This feature can be added to manual start models from 4hp - 20hp. On 8hp - 20hp electric start models, this feature is standard equipment and no additional purchase is necessary. This feature is also standard on 6hp Sail Pro models. here
