The Marine tex won't help or hurt the water tightness of the repair, the fiberglass repair is what's doing that job. Don't use cloth as the first layer of the repair if you are using polyester resin, cloth will give you a poor bond, use at least one layer of mat first.
It will work with epoxy or polyester as long as you taper the edges of the area to be repaired so the new fiberglass has something to stick to. If you want keep the repair as small as possible on the outside, build it up more on the inside for added strength.
Thanks guys-I'm really a rookie with this and the difference between cloth and mat escapes me. Looks like I'd better do some reading b-4 taking this on! I just wanted to get the inside done before we get any rain. It's nice and dry now and I understand it needs to be dry to get a good repair. So it's OK to use polyester resin over an epoxy filler like Marine-Tex? more

Always keep water on hand, clean the surface with a clean, wet rag. If the TE-KA has sat on the surface for a period of time, take toothpaste and TE-KA Part B (mix together well) and scrub the surface well.

The TE-KA has been sitting on the deck too long, or has dried to the surface. Be sure that the deck is not saturated with water (i.e., let dry if just finishing an application of TE-KA.) Wet the deck, wash it again with Part A and water, scrub well (more than normal) and finish washing with Part B.

PC-11 and Marine Tex are similar products. When I was in the pool business I use Fiberglass cloth/fabric and PC-11 for patches all the time. Works great for small quick patches especially Underwater! I see no need to use it in area where you can use normal resin and glass. here

Also, can Marine Tex sand? When you apply the marine tex, fair it as best you can, and you can really minimize sanding. That stuff is very tough to sand, and is often harder than surrounding material (Gelcoat) meaning that if you aggressively sand it the marinetex will stand proud leaving the surrounding material low. here

Mix Marine-Tex in the proper proportions (5:1 ratio by volume.) With a trowel, apply Marine-Tex to the surface and work into all voids and depressions. To minimize sanding, remove excess epoxy with trowel before it cures. Use water to smooth to the desired shape. here

Marine-Tex is an epoxy and is not guaranteed to adhere to the gel coat resin (according to the MT folks). Bottomline, you can probably do it, but just be aware of this. as long as you sand it to rough up the surface. the gelcoat will stick to it. [links]
