Mine smoked like a chimney, but with more smoke. It looked like 420 at Berkley. and it also cured the problem. I now run with the recommended amount of Sea Foam in every tank and haven't had a problem since. here

I had a problem with carb build up (the engine would only go to high throttle after a 10-15 minute warming period) and I did the following "Sea Foaming" -- the stuff works like a charm -- according to tashasdaddy's advice:

Hi danfrompgh. I guess I couldn't say if Seafoam is better or worse than Gumount, but I would think both would help with a high carbon situation if it were to exsist.
I'll throw out a couple other suggestions though.
Have you checked your overflow vent for an obstruction? Sometimes spiders, bees or hornets will make nests there.
Second, have you checked the anti siphon valve at your tank? It may be stuck partially closed not allowing enough fuel to flow.
Finally, try running the boat off a small remote gas tank to eliminate the on board fuel system.
I wouldn't believe you would hurt anything using Gumout or Seafoam in your driveway as long as you had water hooked up to the engine and didn't rev it over 1,000 - 1,200 rpms for long periods of time.
Good luck and report back.

this is what i do. i have an auxiliary tank, borrow one. i mix 3/4 bottle of seafoam in with 1 gallon of gas. the 1/4 left i put in a spray bottle. i remove the air silencer from the carbs. start engine and let it warm up. kill engine, remove the plugs and spray into each cylinder, put plugs back in. let sit for 15 minutes, then restart, and spray seafoam into each carb until the engine almost stalls. it going to smoke as it's burning up the old carbon. repeat the carb spray until it quits smoking. burn up the rest of the gas in the tank. afterwards replace the spark plugs. when you fill the regular tank, add the recommend amount of liquid seafoam, as a fuel stabilizer. if you carbs are dirty it will not clean them. it will only keep clean carbs clean.

Unfortunately, ethanol reacts differently that the alcohol that is in gas driers. Once ethanol absorbs a certain amount of water it phase separates which is why there are so many problems with ethanol in a marine environment. here

As you can see, each product has a different chemical mix, ranging from distilled petroleum products to polyether amines (PEA) and glycol ethers and aryl alcohol. As you go from a general multipurpose cleaner like Seafoam and Gumout Multi System tune up, you’ll see the ingredients change from light oils and Naphtha to PEA, glycol ethers, trimethylbenzene and proprietary products. Keeping in mind that all Top Tier fuels require fuel injector cleaners, it’s worth reviewing the Chevron Techron bulk product that’s added at the fuel depot prior to deliver to the gas station. In my opinion Seafoam or similar products added to a tank of gas won’t hurt your engine, although I’m also not convinced that the light oils and Naphtha based products do much good. I think if you’re going to add a gas treatment to the tank, a product containing polyisbutylamine (PIBA) and polyetheramine (PEA) might perform better. [links]

Seafoam, on the other hand dissolves the deposits in the oil and ensures a complete combustion. It doesn’t just cleans but removes the harmful intruders that causes the engine to surge or hesitate. One of the key features of Seafoam is that it lubricates while cleaning, so, the outer surface always has a coat of varnishing that helps the engine to start easily and hustle free. here

One fact is followed by the other. The improved mileage that Seafoam offers results in the maximize use of the fuel. Seafoam is a product used in every 2000-5000 miles. So it’s a repeated cycle of the purchase yet with adhesive fuel economy it is worth your money and will pay off in the long run. [links]

Many users observe that Gumout doesn’t seem to deliver the same result as the Seafoam. Where, Seafoam works better when being mixed with the gasoline. It is designed to flow through the lines and clean the carbs. Whereas, Gumout, even though fairly effective in every 3000 miles is rather cheaper yet not up to Seafoam.

I'd have to think that a guy spending $XXk dollars on a new ranger who didn't know about ethanol enough to use one of the two and already have an opinion on which one was better. is going to buy this Ford/Chevy statement hook, line and sinker.
