We just got our boat in the water yesterday, and I noticed the life vests are really dirty. Can they be machine laundered?
There should be care instructions on them, the same as you find on clothing. The ones that I had could be laundered and hung to dry. The only problem with this is that they float so they don't want to stay down in the water in the washing machine. here
I also had the problem with ours staying down in the washing machine. Instead I ran mine through the dish washer on light cycle just like I would a load of dishes and air dryed them. They came out great.

The Life-Jacket that had been soaking the longest was then scrubbed twice on each side again then rinsed off thoroughly to remove all traces of soap. They were then hung on the lifelines to dry off before being put back below on the boat. here
My boat is a “please have a Life-Jacket on by the time we leave the dock, they are located below and aft on Starboard, you will find assorted sizes and colors all equally un-stylish.” So they see more wear and dirt than other boats that have the Life-Jackets stored forever in a locker below (remember your Life-Jackets must be readily available, make sure you at least take them out of the plastic packaging they came in). The Life-jackets get more wear & tear on my boat than many other boats and the Life-Jackets pickup dirt and skin oil from being worn.

While you may assume that your winter jacket is dry-clean only, most jackets are machine-washable. You can wash them in an average washing machine without spending extra money on dry-cleaning. First, check the jacket tags and confirm that the jacket is machine-washable. Then, set the washer to a cold, delicate setting and use the same detergent you normally do. Dry it afterwards, and then enjoy your newly-cleaned jacket. [links]
Before getting to how to clean life jackets, make sure you go over these important points so you don’t ruin your life vest. Life preservers need periodic care to extend the life of the jacket.

After you have completed these steps you should have a very clean life jacket. You can now store your life vest for the season as long as the PFD is completely dry. Even if there is a little moisture, keeping a life preserver in a closed space can lead to mold and mildew problems. Not only does this reduce the life span of your personal flotation device, but it also sets you up for another major life jacket cleaning in the future.
Spread a tarp or plastic drop cloth on the ground and fill a bucket with cool water and about two tablespoons liquid laundry detergent. Place the life jackets, with all straps and hardware unfastened, on the tarp and using the detergent solution and soft brush, scrub each side of the jacket.
